The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice-President Kamala Harris, announced a plan to provide long-term, at-home care services through Medicare, the public health insurance program for Americans older than 65.
If approved, the program would represent a major expansion of Medicare, which currently only covers at-home care under narrow circumstances. Harris made the announcement on ABC’s The View, a day-time talkshow popular with older women.
“Taking care of a parent – that means trying to cook what they want to eat, what they can eat,” said Harris. “It means picking out clothes for them, that’s soft enough that it doesn’t irritate their skin. It means trying to think of something funny to make them laugh or smile,” she said.
“We’re talking about declining skills” of older people, “but their dignity, their pride, has not declined,” Harris added…
The Trump administration protected Brett Kavanaugh from facing a full FBI investigation in the wake of serious allegations that he sexually assaulted two women – once in high school and once in college – during his controversial 2018 Senate confirmation to become a supreme court justice, according to a new report.
An investigation led by the Democratic senator Sheldon Whitehouse also found that both the Trump White House and the FBI “misled the public and the Senate” about the scope of the investigation it did conduct into the sexual assault allegations by falsely claiming that the FBI had conducted its investigation thoroughly and “by the book”.
Kavanaugh’s confirmation by the Senate seemed to be in doubt after Christine Blasey Ford, a professor at Palo Alto University, alleged he had sexually assaulted her while the two were in high school. A classmate at Yale, named Deborah Ramirez, alleged in a report published by the New Yorker that Kavanaugh had exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party. Kavanaugh denied both allegations…
Giggling Elon Musk revisits ‘joke’ about Kamala Harris assassination
Billionaire says it would be pointless to kill ‘puppet’ vice-president in interview with Tucker Carlson
Elon Musk has said it would be “pointless” to try to kill Kamala Harris weeks after a pressure campaign led to him to delete a social media post expressing surprise that no one had tried to assassinate the vice-president or Joe Biden.
The Tesla and Space X entrepreneur re-entered the murky waters of political assassinations in a web video interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson which Musk then posted on the X platform that he owns.
Referencing the original comment at the beginning of the one hour and 48 minute exchange, Musk tells Carlson: “I made a joke, which I realised – I deleted – which is like: nobody’s even bothering to try to kill Kamala because it’s pointless. What do you achieve?”
Both men dissolved into laughter, with Carlson responding: “It’s deep and true though.”
Stern — who repeatedly assailed the former president as he interviewed his Democratic rival on Tuesday— blasted Trump’s “delusional” framing of the outcome of this year’s election.
“‘If I win, it’s a fair election. If I lose, Kamala Harris and her buddies fixed it,’” Stern said. “That’s delusional.”
“In America, we call that a sore loser,” Harris replied.
During a mostly friendly, hour-long interview, Stern peppered Harris with questions about her thoughts on Trump and his “chaos” in and out of office, from the “insanity” that he turned down an interview with 60 Minutes because he refused to be fact-checked to the moment he baselessly accused immigrants of eating pets during their only debate…
Arseny Turbin, a Russian 16-year-old sentenced to five years in a juvenile detention facility on terrorism charges, told his mother in a recent letter that he’s suffered physical and psychological abuse in detention. Turbin’s supporters, who published an excerpt from the letter on Telegram, suspect that in addition to assaulting him, Turbin’s cellmates may be stealing his food. Here’s what we know.
Arseny Turbin was sentenced to five years in a juvenile prison in June 2024, when he was still 15 years old. Russian state investigators allege that he joined the Freedom of Russia Legion, a pro-Ukraine unit made up of Russian nationals, in the summer of 2023 and began distributing leaflets criticizing Vladimir Putin on the group’s orders soon thereafter. Turbin maintains that he never joined the legion and that he disseminated the flyers of his own accord. The Russian human rights group Memorial has declared Turbin a political prisoner.
At the moment, Turbin is in pre-trial detention pending an appeal of his conviction. In an excerpt from a letter he sent to his mother that was published by the group Freedom to Arseny on Monday, the teenager described how a cellmate named Azizbek attacked him multiple times. “This evening after 6:00 p.m., one of my cellmates punched me in the head twice while I was in bed,” he wrote. “The situation is really hard, it’s critical. Azizbek punched me and said he was going to fuck me up tonight. The night is going to be very hard. But I’ll hold on.”
Turbin also said that the remand prison has designated him as “prone to terrorism” due to the offense for which he was convicted (“participating in a terrorist organization”).
In their Telegram post, Turbin’s supporters speculated that his cellmates might also be stealing his food, citing the fact that he usually asks his mother for food packages in his letters but that this time he told her he doesn’t need any…
