It was supposed to take him to the southern Gaza Strip. To safety. Just a few hours earlier, the Israeli army had called on Gaza residents to flee to the south, and the Jaber family obeyed the order. An uncle was at the wheel, his father in the passenger seat and 14-year-old Ahmed sat in the back with his brother, two years younger, and their mother between them. They drove for just a few minutes. And then their car exploded.

As of that point, says Ahmed, he no longer remembers anything. When he woke up in the hospital, the doctors told him that his parents were still alive. But even then, he says, he suspected it wasn’t true. In fact, both his parents and his uncle were dead, and his brother was seriously injured. Ahmed’s left leg was mangled and was amputated above the knee. The other leg had suffered such a complicated fracture that the doctors wanted to cut it off as well…
