It’s Not New — It’s Our Legacy | Filosofa’s Word

Race-based hatred and violence are nothing new in the United States and did not start with J.D. Vance’s lies about Haitian immigrants.  In fact, racial hatred and violence are a large part of our history, the history that some would whitewash away given half a chance.  What we see today is just a continuation of centuries of intolerance, racism, and bigotry in all its forms that lead to violence and ultimately murder.  Last Sunday marked the 61st anniversary of one of the most notable and heinous such events, as author/historian Joyce Vance reminds us …

The Legacy of Hate

By Joyce Vance

15 September 2024

Today, it has been 61 years since a white supremacist’s bomb went off at 10:22 a.m. at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four young girls who were getting ready for church services.

VICTIMS OF THE SIXTEENTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH BOMBING ON SEPT. 15, 1963: DENISE MCNAIR, 11; CAROLE ROBERTSON, 14; ADDIE MAE COLLINS, 14; AND CYNTHIA WESLEY, 14. A FIFTH LITTLE GIRL, SARAH COLLINS RUDOLPH, WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED. (CREDIT: AP PHOTO)

In the environment of permissible hate that permeated the culture and the legal system in the Deep South in 1963, the men responsible went unpunished for decades. The FBI officially closed its investigation in 1968, without bringing a single indictment, although they had identified the men responsible. Racist leaders like Alabama Governor George Wallace and Police Commissioner Bull Conner tolerated racial violence, even encouraging it. The Ku Klux Klan lynched Black men and Black boys, using terror to try and maintain political control.

It sounds familiar.

Today, as church bells ring across my city and people mourn the loss of young lives and condemn the evil men who made it possible, this country is at risk of repeating that history. Just like violence against Black people was often justified by lies about crimes they had committed, Donald Trump and J.D. Vance are spreading lies about Haitian immigrants—lies that are so ridiculous they would be laughable if their potential impact wasn’t so deadly serious. A woman who posted on Facebook that a Haitian immigrant had eaten her neighbor’s cat has recanted. But the truth doesn’t matter to Donald Trump, who has continued, as he did on the debate stage last Tuesday, to add outrage over immigrants eating dogs and cats to his repertoire of campaign lies. This morning, on Truth Social, Trump is unleashing a torrent of hate against immigrants—his choice in this election, as in 2016 and 2020, for a spew of venom designed to blind Americans to the truth and force them into Donald Trump’s arms…

Ohio sheriff instructs residents to list homes with Harris-Walz campaign signs | Ohio | The Guardian (Me: Fascist and racist police in Ohio!)

“When people ask me … What’s gonna happen if the Flip – Flopping, Laughing Hyena Wins??” Zuchowski wrote, referring to Harris. “I say … write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards!”

Referring to immigrants as “Illegal human ‘Locust’”, Zuchowski added: “We’ll already have the addresses of the their New families … who supported their arrival!”

In the same post, Zuchowski added screenshots from several Fox News stories claiming that the Biden administration’s immigration policies were fueling a “crime wave” and “destroying small towns”.

At least two commenters said they would be collecting the addresses of neighbors who publicly supported the Democratic ticket, reported the Portager, a local newspaper for the county.

Boar’s Head will never make liverwurst again after outbreak that killed 9 | Ars Technica

…While the statement seems to offer some closure on the outbreak’s source, previously released inspection reports described a facility riddled with sanitation failures. Between August 1, 2023, and August 2, 2024, the facility was cited for 69 violations, which included water leaks, mold in numerous places, algal growth, “meat buildup” caking equipment, and walls that were also crawling with flies and gnats, sightings of other insects, rancid smells, trash and debris on the floors, and even “ample amounts of blood in puddles.”

The New York Times also reported that a 2022 inspection found that the plant posed an “imminent threat” to public health and that inspectors cited “extensive rust, deli meats exposed to wet ceilings, green mold and holes in the walls.”

Cross-contamination

The document newly released by Boar’s Head is a letter dated July 31 from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service notifying the company that the Jarratt facility was suspended. The basis of the suspension was an inspection finding from July 24 and 25 of L. monocytogenes contaminating a pallet jack in a large room where ready-to-eat meats were processed. The room was a common area not specific to liverwurst processing and was deemed by Boar’s Head to be “low risk” for Listeria

Doctors criticise Finland’s proposal to withhold healthcare from migrants | Finland | The Guardian

…Doctors have urged Finland’s rightwing government to change “problematic and damaging” plans to ban undocumented people from accessing non-emergency healthcare, warning it could cost lives.

The government, which includes the far-right Finns party and is led by the conservative National Coalition party leader, Petteri Orpo, has proposed reversing a 2023 law that enables undocumented migrants to access full healthcare, arguing it is aligned with plans to cut spending and immigration.

But the Finnish medical association has argued against the plans, which it said were “very problematic and damaging in many ways”.

Although there would be some exemptions – including children, people whose health is classified as “extremely vulnerable” and people with disabilities – doctors warn the impact of the new restrictions could be life-threatening, as people with conditions such as diabetes or asthma could be left without treatment.

Aino Tuomi-Nikula, an adviser for Physicians for Social Responsibility, said: “Those who tabled this proposal pretend that we don’t have enough money for everyone and that full access to healthcare would invite more people to Finland. We know this is not true, and that it’s actually cheaper to treat conditions in advance by primary healthcare than leaving them to emergency care. This measure is a political stunt to crack down on marginalised people and bank on public fear of migrants.”

Louise Bonneau, an advocacy officer for the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants, said: “Healthcare is a basic human right, not a privilege reserved for some. This law, if passed, would lead to suffering and betray Finland’s commitment to equality and justice. It must be rejected.”
