US could negotiate directly with Hamas to free American Gaza hostages

The US is considering dealing directly with Hamas to free the remaining four American hostages in Gaza.

Relatives of hostages still held by Hamas have been calling for the US to break with Israel and hold talks on a separate deal.

It is not clear how a deal would work and what the US would offer in exchange, but any negotiations would significantly undermine Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

An Israeli official told The Telegraph that “Washington has already began looking at” a unilateral deal.

The American hostages in Gaza who are still believed to be alive are Eden Alexander, 20, Sagui Dekel-Chen, 35, Omer Neutra, 22, and 74-year-old Keith Siegel.

Israel Hinders Polio Vaccination; U.N. Warns Gazans Getting No Food in “Beyond Catastrophic” Scenario – Havana Times

The U.N. is warning more than 1 million people in central and southern Gaza received no food rations in August, adding to a “beyond catastrophic” situation in the war-torn Palestinian enclave. Gaza’s Health Ministry, meanwhile, says Israel is hindering the delivery of polio vaccines as its military refuses to coordinate the entry of medical teams in southern Gaza.

This all comes amid ongoing Israeli aerial and ground attacks. Deaths were reported in Gaza City and the Nuseirat refugee camp earlier today. In Khan Younis, mourners grieved their murdered loved ones at Nasser Hospital, including this mother whose son was killed by an Israeli strike.

Palestinian mother: “A cry of pain comes from the depths of my heart. I want the whole world to hear it. The sound of my pain burns like fire from within. My heart is heavy, full of pain.”

As mass protests in Israel continue to demand a ceasefire and hostage release deal, Hamas has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of continuing to block a deal as he refuses to withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza’s border with Egypt.

‘Deeply disturbed’: White House calls for inquiry into killing of Ayşenur Eygi by Israeli troops | US news | The Guardian

The White House said it is “deeply disturbed” by the death of an American woman who was shot in the head by Israeli troops during a protest against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and called for Israel to investigate her killing, which has caused strong reactions across the international community.

The US state department confirmed the death of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, a volunteer peace activist with the anti-occupation International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

Eygi – a US-Turkey dual national – died on Friday after being fatally shot during a regular protest against settlement expansion in Beita near Nablus, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

The ISM, which organises foreign volunteers in the Palestinian territories, said Israeli forces “intentionally shot and killed” an international human rights activist during the weekly protest on Friday morning. It did not name the volunteer.

“The demonstration, which primarily involved men and children praying, was met with violence from the Israeli army stationed on a hill. The volunteer died shortly after being transported to a local hospital in Nablus,” the ISM said in a statement.

The individual’s family had requested privacy as they mourn their loss, it said. “Their wish to grieve in peace should be respected by all, as they navigate this tragic and difficult situation.”
