In Colorado, high school girls invent device to prevent wildlife collisions – Darcy Hitchcock

In Colorado, an all-girl STEM team was a finalist in a Samsung contest. Calling themselves the Rubber Duckies (after a debugging technique, not bathtub toys), they used artificial intelligence and infrared cameras to identify animals so drivers could be alerted to slow down. They tested the device on the school’s therapy dog. Next, they want to add Bluetooth so their device could talk to the cars.

“The current plan is to utilize an infrared camera to image the surroundings in front to detect animals and warn the driver when animals are in the environment so they can pay more attention, slow down, and be much more likely to avoid a collision,” said Scoville, rising junior and Rubber Duckies member.
