We are a little over three months before reaching the countdown to a brand new calendar year. I recently found an old greeting booklet from a dear friend from years ago with the following poem included on the back of the greeting. As I read it, it made me think about celebrating a new year differently and unofficially every day. With each tomorrow, we will hopefully begin another new year filled with hopes, dreams, and great days ahead to make some profound contributions to the betterment of humankind and the preservation of creation.

It is my hope and prayer that we can slash the divisive nonsense and rhetoric that villanizes our fellow humans because people vow to create fictional and sensationalized stories that try to dehumanize and criminalize our lowly brothers and sisters. May we be empowered to uplift, and unify, even though some people make it difficult to love them.

The Way to a Happy New Year

To leave the old with a burst of song;
To recall the right and forgive the wrong;
To forget the things that bind you fast
To the vain regrets of the year that’s past;
To have the strength to let go your hold
Of the not worthwhile of the days grown old;
To dare go forth with a purpose true,
To the unknown task of the year that’s new;
To help your brother along the road,
To do his work and lift his load;
To add your gift to the world’s good cheer,
Is to have and to give a Happy New Year.
-Author Unknown

While the author of the above poem is unknown, the message resonates with hope, commitment, moving past regrets, and embodying good cheer. We don’t have to wait for the calendar to tell us when to celebrate a new year, because the time is now, not just a day to cross off on the calendar!
