Hope, But With Caution | Filosofa’s Word

A lot of us here in the U.S. are feeling a sense of relief, a sense of renewed hope for our futures both as a nation and as individuals, since Kamala Harris took over as the presumptive Democratic nominee.  The energy and enthusiasm are amazing, and we are seeing hope both in her positive outlook, and in the fact that the opposition’s campaign seems to have hit an iceberg and is floundering.  And this is great … we’re better able to project the positive vibes needed when we feel hope.  However, our optimism should also be tempered with caution, or realism.  I call it cautious optimism; Robert Reich has a slightly different term for it …

WHY WE NEED NAUSEOUS OPTIMISM

A practical guide to finally feeling positive about American politics

By Robert Reich

05 August 2024

For the first time in years, I’ve been walking around with a smile on my face. Maybe you have, too.

The positive energy unleashed by Kamala Harris over the last two weeks is in such stark contrast to the negative energy unleashed by Trump for the last nine years that it feels as if America has had a new beginning.

Complete strangers come up to me — also smiling — and say: “At last!” Or “Isn’t it wonderful?” Or “I’m so relieved!”

Some are calling these far-right riots an outpouring of legitimate anger. They are not | Joe Mulhall | The Guardian

…Many people, including media commentators and even politicians, have sought to frame this week of far-right riots as an outpouring of legitimate anger. It is not. There is nothing “legitimate” about trying to burn down a hotel with asylum seekers inside. There is nothing “legitimate” about hurling bricks at mosques or attacking people of colour. This is far-right violence, motivated by a climate of hate and prejudice, and all of those responsible must be held accountable.

काग़ज़ की नाव / Paper Boat – Kaushal Kishore

⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵

The rain continues to fall as it did in days of our youth,

Water also streams thru the streets, an enduring truth…

But in life’s relentless rush, amid the clamor and fray,

We’ve lost the joy of making paper boats to sail and play…

.

♫ How Can I Be Sure? ♫ (Redux) | Filosofa’s Word

Since I have readers from all over the world, I decided to play all three … The Young Rascals, Dusty Springfield, and David Cassidy.  I have to confess that my headphones died in the middle of the first version and were still charging, so I did not get to listen to Springfield’s and Cassidy’s versions last night.  I love my wireless headphones, but I keep forgetting to charge them! Which version is your favourite?
