The Students Bring Back Hope

The students who organized and led the protests that have brought Dr. M. Yunus into the role of leader for an interim government charged, by specific request of the students, with building a new set of institutions free from coercive armed influence, have accomplished something extraordinary. They have removed an abusive government from power, with the tacit cooperation of some of the armed units at the disposal of that government, when the head of the military “refused to deploy his forces on Monday.” The kids apparently organized all of this, and now, students are even helping to protect police stations and Hindu temples, and directing traffic. This is what can happen with cooperative organization, and apparently, I don’t know for certain as the NPR article did not mention, but it seems that the students did this all themselves, rather than via adult supervision as the kids of SNCC did back in the 1960’s (as SNCC was itself formed by Dr. King and the SCLC, unless I am mistaken). I hope that NPR gives us more details about this situation, how it came about, and how it develops, as the previous 15 years of essentially dictatorship are dealt with and new policies and perhaps even new institutions put in place for a more democratic system that all of us may be able to learn from and use to build more tools for democracy. I am certain that Dr. Yunus will bring careful thought as well as his vast experience to bear on the problem, and I hope that the world pays attention.

US ambassador to Japan to skip A-bomb memorial service in Nagasaki because Israel was not invited | AP News

…“It is unfortunate that ambassadors won’t be able to join us this year, but I hope they will attend from next year,” Suzuki added.

Suzuki had indicated his reluctance in June to invite Israel, noting the escalating conflict in the Middle East. He announced last week that Israel was not invited because of concern over “possible unforeseen situations” such as protests, sabotage or attacks on attendees.

Suzuki said he made the decision based on “various developments in the international community in response to the ongoing situation in the Middle East” that suggested a possible risk that the ceremony would be disturbed. “Aug. 9 is the most important day for Nagasaki City … and we must not let the ceremony be affected,” he said.

Jardim secreto | De malinha pronta

Uma voz calada
Um grito reprimido
Uma promessa selada
Um segredo escondido
Um gesto ausente
Uma marca apagada
Um passado, um presente
Uma mão entrelaçada
Um sonho esquecido
Uma espera eterna
Um desejo oprimido
Uma carícia terna
Um amor puro
Dois seres perdidos
Uma história sem futuro
Dois corpos esquecidos.

Building Bridges Not Boundaries | From Behind the Pen

Our world is saturated with divisiveness on practically every level these days. Quite frankly for me, it is exhausting; wasted energy. Unity seems to be elusive, but I try to keep my eyes focused on the mark of constructing bridges, not barriers.

Bridges connect degrees of separation, while boundaries disconnect and sever the ties that bind. The smell of division permeating through relationships these days is like a wildfire on steroids. But the good thing is, we have an amazing opportunity to pull out our tools of integration and construct a bridge of understanding, opportunity, peace, joy, and love. Bridges build possibilities and unity; boundaries create deadbeat divisions and lifelessness.
