Review: 900 -História de um Rei, by Pedro Seromenho

Sorry to have to say it, but this book was really disappointing. It read more like a narrative meant to indoctrinate rather than a short children’s …

Barrage of hate from far-right Trumpists to Sikh prayer at Republican convention | Republican national convention 2024 | The Guardian

A toxic, racist, far-right response to Harmeet Dhillon’s Monday-night Sikh prayer at the Republican national convention is just one sign of the difficulties Donald Trump and Republicans have in selling a more diverse version of Trumpism to the party’s base.

Social media posts following Dhillon’s prayer indicated that some far-right Trumpists had been polarized by the sight of a non-Christian form of religious devotion on the convention stage in Milwaukee.

The barrage of hate she received from a segment of fellow Trump supporters may have been especially galling to Dhillon, whose earliest public prominence was as a civil rights lawyer defending turban-wearing Sikh men from post-9/11 racial profiling.

2 deaths in listeriosis outbreak linked to plant-based milk recall, Health Canada says | CBC News – Silk and Great Value

Earlier this month, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency recalled certain Silk and Great Value brands of oat, almond and coconut refrigerated beverages over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The president of Danone Canada, the manufacturer of the recalled drinks, said the company was working to investigate the circumstances surrounding the contaminated drinks.

“The news in this notice is devastating and our most sincere sympathies go out to the families and loved ones during this difficult time,” Frédéric Guichard wrote in a statement.

Guichard noted the company has conducted the recall and removed affected products from retail shelves.

Danone had previously said the contaminated products were linked to a specific production line at a third-party manufacturer, but authorities have not yet shared how the products were contaminated with listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis, a rare but serious illness with symptoms that may start suddenly and include vomiting, nausea, cramps, severe headache, constipation or fever. More severe illness may result in the brain infection meningitis and blood infection in newborns and older adults.

In recent years, about 134 cases of invasive listeriosis have been reported annually in the country, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Of these, Public Health Ontario reported 75 cases in 2023, including 14 deaths.

Statement from President Joe Biden on $1.2 Billion in Student Debt Cancellation for 35,000 Borrowers | The White House (Me: Way to go Joe, still my choice for President 2024!)

Today, my Administration is canceling student debt for 35,000 people through Public Service Loan Forgiveness, bringing the total number of Americans who have benefitted from our various debt relief actions to 4.76 million people. Each of those borrowers has received an average of over $35,000 in debt cancellation. These 35,000 borrowers approved for forgiveness today are public service workers – teachers, nurses, law enforcement officials, and first responders who have dedicated their lives to strengthening their communities, and because of the fixes we made to Public Service Loan Forgiveness, they will now have more breathing room to support themselves and their families.

Today’s announcement comes on top of the significant progress we’ve made for students and borrowers over the past three years. That includes providing the largest increases to the maximum Pell Grant in over a decade; fixing Income-Driven Repayment so borrowers get the relief they are entitled to under the law; and holding colleges accountable for taking advantage of students and families. And earlier this year, I laid out my Administration’s new plans that would cancel student debt for more than 30 million Americans when combined with everything we’ve done so far.

From day one of my Administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity. I will never stop working to make higher education affordable – no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us.
