Chinese American Torri Huske wins gold in women’s 100m butterfly – AsAmNews

Chinese American swimmer Torri Huske won gold in the women’s 100 meter butterfly at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, after missing out on a medal in Tokyo by 1/100 of a second, NPR reports.

Huske, 21, beat out her American teammate Gretchen Walsh, who had set the Olympic record a day earlier, PEOPLE Magazine reports.

The race was tight until the end, and after Huske touched the wall, she turned around in disbelief, realizing she had won.

“You can kind of see out of the corner of your eye, but you never really know for sure,” the Stanford University swimmer said, per PEOPLE Magazine.

EnvironmentJewelryMining Pollution

We do love our luxuries and conveniences. Gold, silver, diamonds, and precious jewels make us feel sophisticated, elegant, and important. But how many of us are aware of the impact our adornments have on our planet and the people who live in the areas in which they are mined?

Until recently, I had no idea. One of the blogs that I follow by Barbara Crane Navarro has opened my eyes, and now I realize how much my jewelry has hurt people and our planet.

Most everyone owns at least one piece of gold jewelry, and yet, gold mining is one of the most destructive industries in the world. The process displaces communities, contaminates land and waterways with mercury and cyanide, and causes injuries to workers. The national organization, Earthworks, states on their website that the production of one gold wedding band generates 20 tons of waste from digging and processing the ore.

All mining is damaging, but gold mining is particularly so because it uses a process called heap leaching which includes dripping a cyanide solution through huge piles of ore. This solution strips away the gold for collection and leaves behind 99.99% of what’s mined in piles that are nearly 300 feet high of toxic waste. Surrounding ground water also is contaminated with the cyanide and other dangerous chemicals.

Tailings dams are constructed to retain mine waste. However, according to the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) there have been more than 221 major tailings dam failures. These failures displace people and contaminate the waters causing death to humanity and wildlife. And shamefully, out of the more than 2,000 major mining companies in the world, only one, BHP Billiton, is taking steps to avoid catastrophic destruction.

Metal mining is destroying beautiful habitats in countries such as Miramar, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic as well as our own United States. In fact, Metal mining was the number one toxic polluter in the U.S. in 2010 releasing arsenic, mercury, and lead.

You can find out more about the destruction caused by mining from Earthworks and Barbara Crane Navarro’s blogs.

Ten FUN Facts About Evaporated Milk – In Dianes Kitchen

  1. Evaporated milk is a shelf stable canned cow’s milk product. Approximately 60% of the water has been removed from fresh milk to make evaporated milk.
  2. It differs from sweetened condensed milk as there is no added sugar.
  3. Evaporated milk only takes up half the room of fresh milk. When it is mixed with a proportionate amount of water, evaporated milk becomes the rough equivalent of fresh milk.
  4. Evaporated milk was very popular before the age of refrigeration as a safe and reliable substitute for perishable fresh milk. It could be shipped easily to locations lacking the means of safe milk production or storage.
  5. They add disodium phosphate (to prevent coagulation), carrageenan (to prevent solids from settling), vitamins C and D to the evaporated milk.
  6. If you reconstitute evaporated milk it will be about equivalent to normal milk if you mix one part by volume of evaporated milk with 1 1/4 parts of water.
  7. The shelf life of canned evaporated milk can be about 15 months before any noticeable destabilization occurs.
  8. When left in its thickened, low-moisture canned state, evaporated milk can also stand in for milk or heavy cream as an enriching agent. It thickens up and sweetens coffee, and adds richness to creamy soups and chowders, not to mention savory sauces and even oatmeal.
  9. You may even decide to drink it on its own, especially if you’re trying to gain weight.
  10. What is the difference between evaporated milk and regular milk? Evaporated milk is made by removing water from fresh milk and then heating it. Heating the milk gives it the creamy, slightly cooked taste and darker color. When mixed with an equal amount of water, it can be substituted for fresh milk in recipes too.

This just got me in my feels. A Black woman defending democracy. A Black woman trying to save democracy in America.

It’s crazy, but, Vice President Kamala Harris running like this is peak Black woman in America.
I should have known better.
I think we all anticipated Kamala getting 4 more years, and then running in 2028. We were ready for the free for all in 2028 in the Democratic Party.
That it’s happening this way, is so profoundly Black woman in America, I can’t even get past it.
I look at Black folks, and we are all just looking at one another, understanding the task…understanding the odds, and we’re all like..phuck it….let’s do this…
We are digging deep, to save democracy in America.
It’s who we are. The ones originally designated 3/5 of a human being…
Out here trying to save this country.
That’s who we are.

This picture just gives me chills. To think that Kamala Harris was in the crowd in Springfield, Illinois, on that cold day in 2007, when Barack Obama Announced his run for the Presidency.
