If there is one single state in the U.S. that is more susceptible than the rest to the effects of climate change, it is Florida. Florida has 8,436 miles of shoreline and is vulnerable to rising seas, hurricanes, excessive heat and other acts of nature that have only worsened over the years due to the rise in global temperatures as a result of human activities. You might think, then, that Florida would be right on top of climate change, passing legislation to help mitigate the effects, to protect and preserve the environment. Think again.
From an article in The New Republic dated 15 May 2024:
Ron DeSantis Makes “Climate Change Isn’t Real” Official Florida Law
Ron DeSantis thinks that if the words “climate change” are removed from Florida state law, nobody has to worry about it.
The Florida governor signed legislation Wednesday that would eliminate climate change as a priority in the state’s energy policies and is set to go into effect July 1. The legislation also takes out most of the references to climate change in Florida law, bans offshore wind, and weakens regulations on natural gas pipelines.
“The legislation I signed today [will] keep windmills off our beaches, gas in our tanks, and China out of our state,” DeSantis told Florida’s Voice, an outlet friendly to the Florida governor. “We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots.”
What’s the point of such a bill? Florida faces many threats from a warming climate, including severe hurricanes, higher temperatures, and rising sea levels and flooding. In many cases, the bill is largely symbolic: The state doesn’t have any offshore wind thanks to its low wind speed and severe hurricanes. Instead, it seems to be just the latest example of DeSantis attempting to gain attention from Republicans nationally through embracing the culture wars.

…The international team of researchers used radar satellite imagery to map the river branch, which they called Ahramat – “pyramids” in Arabic.
Radar gave them the “unique ability to penetrate the sand surface and produce images of hidden features including buried rivers and ancient structures,” Ghoneim said.
Surveys in the field and cores of sediment from the site confirmed the presence of the river, according to the study in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
The once mighty river was increasingly covered in sand, potentially starting during a major drought about 4,200 years ago, the scientists suggested…Many of the pyramids had a “ceremonial raised walkway” that ran alongside the river before ending at the Valley Temples, which served as harbours, Ghoneim said…This indicates that the river played “a key role in the transportation of the enormous building materials and workmen needed for the pyramid’s construction”, she added…

The decline of insects means there is less food around for birds like swallows. Photograph: Steve Hedges wildlife photography/Alamy
Swallows, swifts and house martins were once a common sight over UK towns and cities, dextrously catching insects on the wing. But these spring and summer visitors are becoming increasingly rare, according to the definitive survey of the country’s birds.
Populations of these insect-eating birds have dropped by 40% or more in the past decade, according to the latest Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) report.
The decline of insects means there is less food around for these birds and their chicks. There are also fewer places for them to nest as old houses are renovated, leaving fewer gaps in roofs and eaves.
Farmland and woodland birds are also in decline, with the turtle dove – which was once a common sight on agricultural land – showing a reduction in numbers of 97% since 1995. It is now so rare experts can no longer monitor it effectively. Other farmland birds such as grey partridge, lapwing and curlew have all seen their numbers at least halve during the same period.
