A Google find:

I’m 58 years old and I can count how many times I’ve heard that expression on one hand. It’s not, and hasn’t been a common expression since about 1780. A brown cow was a nickname for a barrel of beer, specifically in the early 18th century in Scotland. “How now brown cow” was a way of asking for another pint.

Another wrote that the sentence is used in elocution lessons.

INTROSPECTION

Has the well run dry?

Is nothing left inside?

A vacuum with fading memories.

Be here now!

That’s the catchword.

Climb up, jungle girl!

Peek over the top.

What can you see, hear,

feel? Ah, locked inside with my

my feelings, my song.

Adrift in my bath, the sea!

The third eye blinks

and I am here with you

once more.

Fire…by Mágica Mistura – Mágica Mistura

Everything happens by the fire

Life is a warm breath

That warms our veins

Bringing vitality to the entire body

Our ancestors already knew

And around the fire

They met to exchange experiences…

Fire warms, awakens, stimulates…

He is the one who prepares the food

That comforts us in the dark night

There is fire in each of us

In creation, in the course of work

In the embers of a bonfire

I can see all the flames of life

It’s ‘irresponsible’ to ignore widespread consciousness across animal world, dozens of scientists argue – The Hill

There is good reason to believe fish, amphibians, molluscs and insects are sentient, according to a new declaration signed by three dozen scientists.

The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness argues that current scientific research indicates such widespread animal consciousness is a “realistic possibility” — and that scientists and policymakers must take that into account when considering risks to those animals.

“No Palestinian Is Safe”: Renowned Feminist Scholar Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian Arrested in Jerusalem – Havana Times

By Democracy Now

HAVANA TIMES – Israeli police arrested the internationally renowned feminist Palestinian academic Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian at her home in Jerusalem on Thursday on charges of incitement to violence. Shalhoub-Kevorkian, who holds both Israeli and U.S. citizenship, was suspended by Hebrew University last month after saying in an interview Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, though the university later reinstated her.

We speak with anthropologist Sarah Ihmoud, who describes Shalhoub-Kevorkian as a mentor and inspiration to her and many others. “We hold the Hebrew University of Jerusalem responsible for the arrest and detention because of its persistent and public repression of her academic freedom, which led directly to yesterday’s arrest,” says Ihmoud, who teaches at College of the Holy Cross and is co-founder of the Palestinian Feminist Collective. “We see this as yet another example of Israel attacking Palestinians wherever they are, whoever they are. It underscores that no Palestinian is safe under Israel’s racist apartheid rule…”

Felicidade – Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

– Que felicidade a minha!

Eu, chamo de felicidade

Poder abraçar a vida,

– É a esperança!

Dentes nevados

Olhos belos

e alma pura, feito coração de criança.

Que felicidade!

The woman behind the windows The life and art of Estonian stained glass master Dolores Hoffmann — Meduza

Story by Aliide Naylor for The Beet. Edited by Eilish Hart.

This story first appeared in The Beet, a weekly email dispatch from Meduza covering Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Sign up here to get the next issue delivered directly to your inbox.

Estonian artist Dolores Hoffmann nurses a hot cup of tea in front of a crackling log fire. The walls of her studio, in a low-ceilinged medieval building in central Tallinn, are covered in vibrant artworks and sketches produced and accumulated over her decades-long career. Now 86 years old, Hoffmann broke onto the Soviet Union’s art scene in the 1960s and would become best known for her work with brightly colored stained glass. But the picture she paints of her childhood is bleak.
