Two Stunning Portraits of Young Kiowa Girls, 1894 ~ Vintage Everyday

The girls were born and raised during the reservation period, which lasted from 1868 to 1906. The US had previously tried to assimilate their tribe by sending in Quakers and Christians as “Indian agents” to teach English and introduce concepts of Christianity and Euro-American culture. These agents also tried to convince the Kiowas to give up hunting and focus on farming. When this did not work, soldiers were dispatched to destroy the tribe’s food, clothing, shelter, and horses, effectively ending their ability to survive the impending winter.
The Kiowas reluctantly settled on the reservation where housing was provided for the chiefs; however, they continued to sleep in their tipis. The first Kiowa school was established in 1873 by Quakers, and all Kiowa children were forced to attend.

The pond

In the sky spongy with gray clouds
the flight of a sparrow is camouflaged.
He escapes the din of the city
in search of light and air
of a lonely place
where the short syllables of the song
resonate in the silence like a hymn
to the happiness of being understood
by the trees waiting for him
among the leaves for a love braw
by the flowers whose petals
will dress it in the colors of spring.
Afraid of the wind that pushes him
in the darkness of high clouds and fog
of unknown horizons
closes its wings and swoops down
like a haggard eagle
like a dirty golf ball
thrown far away
in the pond of a swan and his partner.
An intruder who can’t swim. He gasps
she flaps her wings, opens her beak and chirps
her last song.
The swan listens to him perplexed.
His partner knows what it means to die
when the egg. which she gives birth to, slips
between the jaws of a fox.
she cries.
But the swan knows
only that moment of negligence
that still burns him with humiliation..
The sparrow drowns between pity and regret.
