Ukraine is England 1940.

But, instead of being the last country standing, it’s the first. We need to help it because helping it, helps us fight Putin.
And, he needs to be fought at every level.

Sadly, I realized that nothing is going to change with Ukraine until after the November 2024 Election. Putin is hanging on, in hopes that Dolt45 will win. And, of course, Dolt45 being Putin’s lapdog, he will pull out American financial support for Ukraine, and begin to mess with our relations in NATO.

So, we need to fully fund Ukraine until November 2024.

🧵I went to the Pentagon today with several colleagues for a briefing on Ukraine and what will happen if we fail to support its military. It was the most stark description of the stakes — for both Ukraine and US interests — should we fail to provide more military aid. /1

First, it’s no secret that Ukraine is running short of critical ammunition – artillery shells to hold Russia’s ground forces back, and air and missile defenses to knock down the missiles Russia uses to attack Ukrainian civilians. /2

Russia would be able to strike Ukraine’s cities with ballistic missiles, destroying its economy, damaging critical infrastructure like energy plants, and raising worldwide food prices as Ukraine is unable to export grain that feeds millions around the globe. /3

Russia could break through the current front lines and capture more territory, subjecting more of Ukraine’s people to the same horrific crimes that took place at the start of the war. /4

Ukrainian refugees, fleeing bombardment and the cruelty of Russian forces, would leave in massive numbers, creating new strains for our European allies. /5

In short: We can pay now to help Ukraine, or we can pay much more later to counteract the strategic gains we would hand Vladimir Putin and Russia. /6

And this tragedy would ripple far beyond Ukraine. It has major implications for US leadership, and would mark the unofficial end of more than 70 years of our commitment to democracy and to standing up to autocracies around the world. /7

Make no mistake, our adversaries & our friends are watching. China will take note that the US was unwilling to finish the job & use that in their calculus on Taiwan. Our friends will doubt our fortitude, their safety & will look to other countries (read: China) for leadership. /8

The irony is that there is a bipartisan agreement, negotiated in the Senate, that would send help to Ukraine, as well as Taiwan & Israel, & secure our own border. I hope the Senate considers it & I hope Speaker Johnson changes course & brings it to the House floor for a vote./9

If not, historians may remember this as the moment when America gave up on defending democracy. When our political polarization got so bad that we abandoned the principles our grandparents fought for. /10

This is what’s at stake.

Putin held three cards against Ukraine:

The first was Russian military might. That card was defeated.

The second was dependence on Russian energy. That card failed.

The third was Putin’s hold on Donald Trump, and through Trump, the US Republican Party. That card is working.

Watch: President Biden calls Trump’s Nato comments “shameful”

President Joe Biden has blasted criticism of Nato by his likely 2024 election challenger, Donald Trump, as “dumb”, “shameful” and “un-American”.

The Democrat assailed Mr Trump for saying he would “encourage” Russia to attack any Nato member that did not meet its defence spending quota.

Mr Biden said the remarks underscored the urgency of passing a $95bn (£75bn) foreign aid package for US allies.

The bill just passed the Senate, but it faces political headwinds in the House.
