Recently I was having a conversation about a nearby town that has been in the news complaining about the deer overpopulation problem because locals are saying deer have overrun town streets and neighborhoods. Well duh! No one seems to think about what happens when you displace deer and other wildlife that inhabited the land way before humans invaded the territory with our so-called ‘progress constructs.’
We have gotten to a point where no matter who or what we kick out of their habitat, someone or something will be homeless and we should not be inconvenienced when we created the inconvenience in the first place. Now get this. The town’s leaders authorized the use of a sharpshooter to cull 160 deer, which will cost $94,000. The town was originally authorized to cull 80 deer before getting approval from the state to double that number. Huh? Now, you have to wonder what are they going to do with all of those dead deer?…

Poetry’s thoughts on the day after the apocalypse
the day at the end of the world
the sparrows may play still
dancing in the sunlight
like fish swimming
straight for a hook
snakes colours changing
like apples ripping
the day at the end of the world
she walks by with a red umbrella
sometimes she’s drowsy on the lawn
a hawker might lose their place
to shout and advertise their wares
the day at the end of the world
a gold ship advance closer to the shore
in a breath brought with it a sunken island from afar
took everyone into a charming night of national pride full of stars
the day at the end of the world
the people who thought they were the thunder and lightning
will be disappointed
the people waiting for the angels
discovers it will never happen
the day at the end of the world
the sun and the moon are still in the sky
the bees still be playful over the flowers
children will still be born
people will still go grey
like a doom
day prophet
there will never be an end of the world
the world will never end
you will have
a tomorrow of peace
a tomorrow of shining democracy
like the full autumn moon bearing an August star
maybe
yes
yes
yes
or no?
Lê Vĩnh Tài, the poet and translator born in 1966 in Buon Ma Thuot, Daklak, Vietnam. The retired doctor is still a resident of the Western Highlands and a businessman in Buon Ma Thuot.

The stroke of Governor Evers’s pen today marks the end of the shameful period that began in 2011, when Republican lawmakers—bound in secrecy by nondisclosure agreements as they worked with operatives at a lobbying firm—drew legislative lines that guaranteed that even landslide election losses wouldn’t cost them their majorities. The result was one of the most egregious, extreme partisan gerrymanders in American political history.
