Retro Music 107 | beetleypete

Written over 100 years ago in 1923, I think this song really qualifies as ‘Retro’.

The best-known version was recorded by Bessie Smith, the American Blues singer, in 1929. The release coincided with The Wall Street Crash, making the lyrics eminently suitable to the catastrophic financial situation.

Bessie Smith was born in 1894, and became the most popular singer in the Blues genre during her lifetime. She died in 1937, 15 years before I was born. But by the time I was 11 years old, I was collecting her records and others like them.

Ocean heating breaks record, again, with disastrous outcomes for the planet – Stigmatis News

  • New research shows that ocean temperatures are hotter than ever in the modern era due to human-driven global warming.
  • High ocean temperatures are placing a strain on marine life and biological processes while also increasing extreme weather events on land.
  • The world is also seeing an escalation in the frequency and intensity of marine heat waves, events in which sea temperatures exceed a certain threshold for five days or more.

Human actions are rapidly changing the world’s oceans, whether through overfishingpollution or coastal development. But among the most intense pressures placed on the seas right now is humanity’s ongoing burning of fossil fuels, pumping dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which in turn has pushed sea temperatures to record levels.

THERE HAS BEEN A WRONG TURN SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE – Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

A poem in Vietnamese by Đinh Thị Như Thúy
Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

it has been so long since
our feet have touched the ground
no way of escaping that feeling of hanging there, up in the air
no way to even fake a smile
no way of avoiding the thoughts of inadequacy, how useless we are
to those all around us

it has been so long since
we touch those we love

there has been a wrong turn somewhere along the line in time
something has missed the boat
something was in the way
if only we could go back
if only we could start again
if only we knew what we were doing

memory might be a garbage dump but it is not
its only purpose
we have to dig in
and make a mess

it has been so long since
the habituation of taking sides selfishness
pulling us along with its tides
to weakness and cowardice, we would yield
like a blusterous storm across a field
dragging away with it
the poor small
desiccated dandelions
