What’s Behind the ‘Arctic Blast’ Plunging into the U.S.? | Scientific American

A person in hat, scarf and gloves bracing against the cold wind

Typically, very cold air in the Arctic is trapped inside a high-altitude swirl of winds called the polar vortex, which is surrounded by a lower-altitude band called the polar jet stream. If the polar vortex gets disrupted, however, the jet stream can become wavy and carry frigid air much farther south than usual in an Arctic blast. Sometimes this frigid air brings snow and ice; other times the weather is dry but bitterly cold…

Open Thread | Democrats Need to Take Back ‘ Parent’s Rights’ | 3CHICSPOLITICO

I saw this at another blog, and the discussion was that Democrats need to take back ‘ Parent’s Rights’ from the GOP.

@Kay: I think we need to take back the “Parents’ Rights” narrative entirely and make it our own.

We believe in Parents’ Rights:

• To have our daughters (and Transgender sons) have full autonomy and control of their bodies.

• To give our Transgender kids the gender-affirming care they need for their health and well-being, without interference from the government.

• To have our LGBTQ kids treated with dignity and respect in schools.

• To have our children see themselves represented in the history curricula in our classrooms (Black, Native/Indigenous, Latinx, LGBTQ, history etc.)

• To have all children live without the fear of school shootings.

• To have all children be able study without the distraction of an empty stomach.

BRAVO!!
ABSOLUTELY.

These are the Parent’s Rights that Democrats need to talk about in 2024.

My Snarky Snippets Bucket Overflows | Filosofa’s Word

More than eight million children will be left out of a new federal food assistance program for needy families this summer because they live in one of the 15 states, all led by Republican governors, that refuse to participate.  Why are those 15 governors turning down federal funds that would help feed hungry children?  Here are a few of their excuses …

  • Mississippi governor, Tate Reeves, says that he rejects “attempts to expand the welfare state.”
  • Nebraska governor, Jim Pillen, said “I don’t believe in welfare.”
  • Iowa governor, Kim Reynolds, claims “an E.B.T. card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic.”

Our very own Marie Antoinette who famously did not actually say, “Let them eat cake”.  I would really like to see these governors live for one month on naught but a minimum wage paycheck!…

Surge in Cybercrimes – Kaushal Kishore

India, experiencing phenomenal growth in the fintech sector, with an ever-expanding base and volume of tech-based transactions and payments, has become a prime target for cyberattacks, constituting 13.7% of all incidents. The US follows at 9.6%, Indonesia at 9.3%, and China at 4.5%.

Recent cybercrime data reveals a national rate of 129 incidents per lakh citizens, with Delhi leading at 755 cases per lakh in 2023, surpassing all other states and union territories. Chandigarh secured the second spot with 432 cases, while Haryana and Telangana reported 381 and 261 cases per lakh, respectively.

Since its launch in August 2019, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal has received over 3.26 million complaints, revealing a staggering loss of Rs 10,300 crore to frauds and scams. Last year, a mere 12% of the defrauded funds were successfully recovered…

What brings us together? – Silent Songs of Sonsnow

“Human beings are social animals. What brings us together is love and affection—anger drives us apart. Just as we employ physical hygiene to protect our health, we need emotional hygiene, the means to tackle our destructive emotions, if we are to achieve peace of mind.”

His Holiness the great 14th Dalai Lama
