A day meant to build community and a safe space for minority students has prompted a lawsuit from the conservative group Judicial Watch which has labeled the event “racially segregated.”
The group filed the suit to demand that records from the “playdate” at the Oakland Unified School District in California be turned over.
The event held at Chabot Elementary School was entitled “Playdate Social for Black, Brown & API Families.”
The word “diversity” and efforts to make minorities feel welcomed have been weaponized by conservatives building on the momentum of a supreme court decision this summer that outlawed the use of race in college admissions.
The Utah senate has passed a bill that would prevent schools from organizing programs intended to help students of color. The state of Florida banned diversity, equity and inclusion programs in colleges. Texas new law banning DEI went into effect at the beginning of the year.
