Merchant: California must call Google’s and Facebook’s bluff on news – Los Angeles Times

In June, Canada passed a law that will require major tech platforms such as Google and Facebook to pay a small fee when they host news on their platforms, to compensate the journalistic outlets that produced it. A similar bill recently cleared crucial hurdles in California and now has a serious chance at becoming law too.

In response, Google and Facebook say they will have no choice but to ban news altogether from their services in those markets when and if these laws go into effect.

California and Canada must absolutely not give in to the tech giants’ tantrum. This is a bluff, and not a particularly convincing one. For the sake of the beleaguered news industries in both places (yes, including this media outlet), the Canadian and Californian governments must absolutely call it.

Transcend … by Magic Mixture

Turn the page, jump the fence

Change the disc, pray the legend

Hold the scream, hold the air

Sail on the moon, move the sea

Dance to the rhythm of the rain ,

turn the corner and bet

Make honey and cinnamon cakes

Offer to fairies, gnomes and the like

Braid ribbons in your hair, take off your shoes

Light incense to the cherubim

Transcend beliefs, or disagreements

Explode in glitter, laugh in color

Tile the street with pearls

Spread the scent of flowers ,

Become a child and grow up, with all good humor

Send the sadness to the beans, hold tight to the “it already worked”

Run free, with nature learn

Behold the perfect creation, go there

Jump the wall, tear the silks

Writing Process Wednesdays: Journal thinking vs craft learning

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

I also see that I tried to pay too much information to writing advice rather than relying on or trusting my own writing resources.

Like this idea of HIPHook, Intensity building, and Prompt or payoff leading into the next scene.  Yes, it is true that this is what every scene needs to do, but for me, trying to plan out my scenes with all of this in mind before I knew my characters turned out to be a waste of time.

I also see that writing experience tells you how to judge both the pacing and the intensity of each individual scene.  That can only happen by writing scenes and stories that continue to connect to each other, like chapters in a book.  This is what happened to me with my accidental easy serial,  Ann &…

Wild Ramps Charbroiled

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Table Food: Wild Ramps Charbroiled! Whether you stumble upon this coveted crop at your neighborhood Farmers Market, or are fortunate enough to forage them yourself, wild ramps are as rare as hens teeth. You better have a plan. Unless you pickle them or freeze them, the best you can hope for is a 4-5 day shelf life in the refrigerator. At that point they will begin to deteriorate, develop an offensive odor, and you will have lost your window of opportunity for the year. Practice sustainable harvest. Never take more than you intend to eat.

WILD RAMPS CHARBROILED

Ingredients:

1/2 pound wild ramps

1/3 cup olive oil

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon crushed oregano

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 425°. Wash thoroughly every crevice and leaf stem of each ramp. Cut off and discard bulb roots. Rinse again. Gently pat dry with paper towels. Transfer…
