There’s no smoke without fire, they say. Fire (and smoke) has been very much on our minds lately. In Canada,forest fires rage unabated. Although they are quite used to a “fire season,” this is the worst for over thirty years, with around 19.5 million acres burned so far (can you imagine?) and popping up all over the place. This has had a terrible effect on air quality, with smoke drifting across to the United States and even, recently, to Europe. The skies over New York and other cities have had an eerie glow.

Now, much closer to home and across the Caribbean, we continue to be plagued by fires. I have been writing about it for years now, and the Jamaica Environment Trust has campaigned on the issue – in particular, the horrific fires we have endured when our dumps catch fire (no, they are not landfills).
