Just shooting blindly at shadows running away`? Why shoot at somebody who is running away? How can that be a threat?

I suspect he knew what he was doing and felt justified because they were on his property and startled him. In short he is evil and felt it was ok to shoot.

Can one just shoot people in America without warning just because they are on one’s property?

Only if you can convince police and or a jury that you were in fear of your life and only in 19 or 20 states. In the other states it is homicide. In humane states you must give a warning and or attempt to escape before resorting to self-defense when being attacked.
