Die innerste Kammer in einem Menschen … The innermost chamber of a human being

Stella, oh, Stella

Black Women Writers at Work: Remembering Audre Lorde

Context, Critical Thinking, Continuous Learning: Project Do Better

I am so glad I happened to see this book Black Women Writers at Work by Claudia Tate at the public library. My rating: 4 of 5 stars I was moved with both recognition, and with fear, at Audre Lorde’s comment that “it’s scary because we’ve been through that before. It was called the fifties.”[…]

Sanders and Warren Grill US’s Largest Grocer on Reports of Rampant Wage Theft – Truthout

Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) are demanding that Kroger, the U.S.’s largest supermarket brand, address reports of and lawsuits over “systemic and widespread errors” in the company’s payroll system that labor advocates say have opened the door for the company to commit wage theft.

The lawmakers say that Kroger’s latest failure to pay workers is part of a pattern for the company and adds further evidence to their argument that the company’s planned merger with Albertson’s, also one of the U.S.’s largest grocery chains, should be stopped by antitrust regulators.

Big Big World

Inhale Peace; Exhale Love. Joy will Follow! - RUELHA

I’m still Daddy’s little girl Ill-equipped to handle all that did unfurl Twenty-four years since catastrophe struck Uprooted from the ground, got plucked Sure, I’m a big girl And, it’ll be absurd if I lay curled All the things that could have been Dreaming about erasing all I’d seen So much of life, learned on my own Independent, not by choice, grown Obviously, I’d have it another way If destiny ever asked for my say But, I’m a big girl Forced to step into the world Without my hero cheering me Embraced chaos, to escape reality But, if I stop running and look back It’s been quite a distorted track Though dodged, overtaken, and outrun Incomparable, the loss of a loved one I’m a big girl In a big world It’s not a big thing I stayed there clinging Though it’s cold outside No longer can I hide Time to…

Happy Birthday, Toni Morrison

Context, Critical Thinking, Continuous Learning: Project Do Better

Today is the day, in 1931, on which this Nobel Laureate and exemplary writer was born. I look back to the words of Toni Morrison, that we need dreamers to dream of new possibilities for shaping our world, new ways of being, ways that move us toward caring for each other, toward making it[…]

Updated repost: Parashat Mishpatim, “Na’aseh VeNishmah” as Do First and Buy-In Later, via Education?

Context, Critical Thinking, Continuous Learning: Project Do Better

This week’s Torah portion is Parashat Mishpatim (פרשת מִשְׁפָּטִים), the 6th in the book of Shemot/Exodus, and the 18th weekly Torah portion in the annual cycle. This year, 5783, we looked at last week’s parashah, Parashat Yitro from a Public Health point of view. As with last year, this week, traditional congregations (and maybe a few Masorti/Conservative Movement folks) will read of the inter-generational (in theory, or at least in Midrashic legend) acceptance of[…]
