Migrant workers: Qatar still to answer for mass wage theft | openDemocracy

For Babu, the stakes were high. He expected to receive around $5,500 as his end-of-service benefit. Babu was told that he would be paid soon, so he waited. He stayed in Qatar as long as he could. But it didn’t come. “Finally,” Babu said, “when we couldn’t manage money, even for food, a few of us returned, giving up hope.”

Unsettled accounts

Accounts of wage theft have dogged the production of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar almost since its inception. Already in 2014, The Guardian was reporting that hundreds of migrant construction workers from Bangladesh and Nepal had gone without wages for more than a year. They had been tasked with building, of all things, the luxury offices for the tournament’s organisers in Al Bidda Tower – nicknamed ‘the Tower of Football’.

The Day That Lives On — December 7, 1941 — Filosofa’s Word

Today is the 81st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbour, a day that, in the words of then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt, “will live in infamy.”  I posted this on this day in 2019, but it bears repeating.  Annie G. Fox was a true hero on that day and should be remembered for all that […]

Dynamic Equilibrium

Kaushal Kishore

Did you see the video? It’s not a miracle, it’s a reality. Trust is not in the chair, it’s in the friendship and collaboration. It is a real experiment called Dynamic Equilibrium.

Do you remember dynamic equilibrium in chemistry? It’s a reversible process, when the forward and reverse processes occur at the same rate, and reaction appears to have stopped, but the actual reaction goes on, as the rate of formation of reactants is equal to the rate of formation of products.

For example, in the reaction, NaCl = Na + Cl becomes in dynamic equilibrium, when the rate of the dissolution of NaCl equals the rate of crystallisation.

The human body also interacts with itself to maintain a balance with changes, e.g. temperature. This is called human homoeostasis. A state of balance is needed among all organs and systems for the body to survive and function properly.

‘Humanity is treating nature like a toilet, committing suicide by proxy’: UN chief

He accused multinational corporations of filling their bank accounts while emptying ”our world of its natural gifts.” ”With our bottomless appetite for unchecked and unequal economic growth, humanity has become a weapon of mass extinction. We are treating nature like a toilet. And ultimately, we are committing suicide by proxy,” he said. ”The loss of nature and biodiversity comes with a steep human cost. A cost we measure in lost jobs, hunger, disease and deaths. A cost we measure in the estimated $3 trillion in annual losses by 2030 from ecosystem degradation. A cost we measure in higher prices for water, food and energy.”
