Fungal Toxins a Growing Threat to Wheat | Food Manufacturing

Fusarium mycotoxins were discovered in every European country. Half of the wheat intended for human food in Europe contains the Fusarium mycotoxin “DON” (commonly referred to as vomitoxin) while in the U.K., 70% of wheat is contaminated. Governments set legal limits on DON contamination levels in wheat that is to be consumed by humans. These regulations provide effective protection, with 95% of wheat destined for the table meeting the safety limits for DON concentration. However, the finding that mycotoxins are ubiquitous is concerning, as the effect of constant, low-level exposure to mycotoxins in our diet over the course of a lifetime is not known.

COVID-19 cases up in NYC schools, but mask-wearing is not – Gothamist

Parents and teachers say they are concerned that New York City schools and city officials are not being forceful enough about encouraging indoor masking as COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses rise in the city ahead of winter break.

Data from the city health department shows that weekly COVID case rates have doubled among teenagers since late October and rose 76% in kids aged 5 to 12. Children have made up two-thirds of emergency department visits for flu-like illness since Thanksgiving.

Musk’s Twitter bans accounts of multiple journalists (Me: Freedom of speech for me but not thee – lol)

Elon Musk’s Twitter on Thursday banned the accounts of multiple journalists covering the technology industry without explanation.

Accounts belonging to CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, The New York Times’ Ryan Mac, and The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell and several other tech journalists were all abruptly suspended.

“Elon says he is a free speech champion and he is banning journalists for exercising free speech. I think that calls into question his commitment,” Harwell told CNN.

The account of progressive independent journalist Aaron Rupar was also banned. Rupar told CNN he has received no communication from Twitter about the ban. “Nothing,” he said in a phone call.

CNN has reached out to Musk and Twitter for comment.

The suspensions came after Twitter shut down on Thursday an account belonging to Mastodon, an emerging competitor.
