Someday I hope to run across more photos of my British grandmother who died in her 30s and was a professional swimmer and diver. Mary (Marie) Rhodes Finney. Used to entertain at Blackpool and dove off of London Bridge. She and her brother James competed performed 1890s-1910

That’s an interesting family connection, Ned. You may have seen this history of the Finney family and their swimming exploits. Marie is mentioned from page 9.

Yes, I found that yesterday. Thanks. My father was a long distance swimmer in his youth. It was popular in 1920-30s. My mother and he actually met on a swimmer resting buoy 5 miles from show in Penobscot Bay, Rhode Island USA. He and his father emigrated to US in 1913. She rejoined her brother in their act a few years after his birth and remained in the UK.
