Animals are key to restoring the world’s forests | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
As UN climate talks close in Egypt and biodiversity talks begin in Montreal, attention is on forest restoration as a solution to the twin evils roiling our planet. Forests soak up atmospheric carbon dioxide and simultaneously create habitat for organisms. So far, efforts to help forests bounce back from deforestation have typically focused on increasing one thing—trees—over anything else. But a new report uncovers a powerful, yet largely overlooked, driver of forest recovery: animals. The study by an international team from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Yale School of the Environment, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute examined a series of regenerating forests in central Panama spanning 20 to 100 years post-abandonment. The unique long-term data set revealed that animals, by carrying a wide variety of seeds into deforested areas, are key to the recovery of tree species richness and abundance to old-growth levels after only 40 to 70 years of regrowth. it’s pain on a white piece of paper
not a poem

battering, crippling, numbing
deaden emotions, there’s nothing left to feel
you are left with nothing child, the pain

the hopelessness, I too
need to
leave
you

we do not have a name
we are the nameless

Tsinghua University Student Protest
A poem in Vietnamese by Thái Hạo Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

Tsinghua University Student Protest
they hold up white sheets of paper
the transparency
they took to the streets with the light in their hands
not pickaxe
not bricks
.
Tiananmen, the fallen students under the tank
30 years later, again the students took their stance
it’s China’s luck when those who have taken to the streets
were young people from a university
not old men with sticks from the slum
the blood of students in white
will wash away the humiliation
.
Student
our students are screaming too
in the pubs in front of giant TV screens
angry and shouting from losing a bet
none of them remember to bring a white sheet of paper
to write their suicide note with a mathematical equation
before flying down to the dorm yard in the…

Violência Contra a Mulher

Tolerance, Love, Kindness Instead of Hate … PLEASE! — Filosofa’s Word

Mass shootings, racist teachers, pushing, shoving and name-calling … so may signs of increasing incivility in the U.S. today. Where does it all come from and more importantly, how do we stop it? Where do people get the idea that one race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, or religion is somehow superior? Humanity sometimes seems to […]
