Dozens have died in high-speed chases instigated by U.S. Border Patrol

In the past five years, 13 people in southern New Mexico have died in a Border Patrol car chase. That’s a huge uptick from the previous five years — in which no such deaths occurred, according to the Southern Border Communities Coalition, a San Diego-based organization of 60 border communities in California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

According to an SBCC report, Border Patrol’s chases are more deadly than its shootings: Between 2010 and 2022, 38 percent of people killed in an encounter with immigration agents died from a car chase, car accident or vehicle explosion. By comparison, fatal shootings attributed to the Border Patrol made up just 28 percent of violent deaths.

The chases might be instigated to apprehend undocumented immigrants, but they can end up hurting — and killing — U.S. citizens, as well. According to a review of the agency’s own published statements, 23 percent of crash fatalities in New Mexico involve U.S. citizens; nationally, that rate is at least 10 percent. It is likely that these statistics are a significant undercount, since many law enforcement reports don’t reveal the victim’s nationality.

Avian influenza wipes out millions of birds in Colorado, impacting egg industry – CBS Colorado

Avian influenza has roared back through Colorado farms. Gov. Jared Polis has declared a disaster emergency as 85% of all egg-laying hens have had to be destroyed.

The number of hens lost to avian influenza is around 48 million in the US. The effect can be felt at the grocery store according to Colorado’s assistant state veterinarian Dr. Morgan McCarty.

“There has been an average 26% increase in the cost of eggs over the past year. We are going to see an increase in turkeys and chicken,” she said.

A quarantine is in place in parts of Weld and Boulder counties with a disaster emergency order in effect from the governor.

What is causing the latest outbreak of Ebola in Uganda? – Palm Oil Detectives

What is zoonotic disease spill-over?

Zoonotic spillover requires close contact between a human and an animal or its organic material. This occurs when humans destroy rainforest ecosystems for industrial agriculture, rapid urbanisation, mining or other land conversion. Illegal wildlife hunting, bushmeat trade and the illegal pet trade expose humans to new pathogens from these wild animals. This pathogen transfer is the zoonotic spill-over from wild animal hosts to human hosts.

Bushmeat is a suspected vector for HIV and Ebola. Primates, rodents, pangolins, antelope, and vipers have all been shipped along air routes. One study found that 100% of seized bushmeat samples intercepted at borders had bacteria that was unsafe for human consumption. (C4ADS, 2020).
