Bula’di — Weekend Stories by Trishikh

“Modern Indian women do not like to wear the saree Bula’di. It is 2011 and not 1971. We prefer jeans and a top. Further, the saree is neither sporty nor comfortable. It restricts one’s mobility,” smartly commented twelve-year-old Nehusta. “Stop calling your grandma Bula’di, child. Please call her granny. You address your elder sister as ‘Di’ and […]

Why fish are disappearing from Amazonian waters

  • From the coastline to freshwater streams, people living in Amazonia say industrial fishing, deforestation, hydroelectric dams and climate change have reduced fish populations.
  • Industrial fishing is one of the main explanations for the low numbers. Fishermen report that large boats are trawling with nets up to 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) in length that do not allow fish to reach the shore.
  • Other challenges local fishers are facing have to do with the effects of climate change on rivers and mangroves, including increased temperature and lower pH and oxygen levels in the water, which make it harder for species to survive.
  • Hydroelectric dams are a threat to inland Amazonian fish species because they interrupt migratory flow, leading to genetically compromised populations; this phenomenon has been seen in the Xingu River, which, dammed by the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, is suffering from falling fish reproduction rates.

Thought for Today: Hit the Mute Button

From Behind the Pen

There’s a lot of noise and distractions swirling around us today. There are far too many people who seem to have things in order or those trying to do the right thing, who are falling into a trap of anxiety, panic attacks, feeling gloomy, and overwhelmed. Enough already! Enough already! Enough!

Tomorrow is not here and not promised. Yesterday is long gone, and there is nothing you can do about it. So step away for a while today. Push your mute button to silence the noise that’s aggravating you, and hit your pause button to freeze-frame the swirls of chaos trying to make you dizzy. Your health, your heart, your mind, and your spirit need not suffer due to the outside craziness. Not today, and tomorrow ain’t lookin’ too good either! Hit your mute button when you need to, and as often as you need to.

CBS News: Leader of Dominion Voting System Speaks Out Against Election Lies

Diane Ravitch's blog

Anderson Cooper interviewed John Poulos, the CEO of Dominion Voting Systems on 60 Minutes about the attacks on the integrity of his company’s voting machines by 2020 election deniers.

Despite a rash of unsubstantiated claims lobbed against his company, the CEO of Dominion Voting Systems, John Poulos, has remained largely silent. That changed Sunday night on 60 Minutes when Poulos sat down with Anderson Cooper, saying irreparable damage has been done to his company and his employees.

“People have been put into danger. Their families have been put into danger. Their lives have been upended and all because of lies,” Poulos said. “It was a very clear calculation that they knew they were lies. And they were repeating them and endorsing them.”

“It’s important to you people admit what they said was wrong?” Cooper asked.

“It’s important to me. It’s important to all the people whose families have been impacted…
