WHITE MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY
A Maasai led initiative to regenerate landscape and livelihood
in the White Mountain (Mt. Kilimanjaro) region.
(Kenya, Tanzania, 2017 – present)
Amboseli, the beautiful iconic region right under Mt. Kilimanjaro, Kenya. And particularly the Maasai peoples who have been living in these savannah for generations. For the last two years not a drop of rain has fallen in this degraded landscape. The scorching drought puts an immense pressure on all of life. Cows are dying, Elephants, Giraffes and Lions are not making it. The Maasai are on the edge.
Maasai and Embassy of the Earth in 2019 convened a large group gathering in Amboseli to produce the most desirable future, strategies and relevant actions for this iconic habitat. Their future had, among other things, its focus on regeneration of landscape and livelihood; equilibrium among people, livestock and wildlife; protecting Maasai culture. It was the birth of the White Mountain movement! Oldonyo Oibor, White Mountain as the Maasai call Kilimanjaro.
A week ago, we got news that the situation in the villages in Amboseli was reaching a critical point. Their beloved cows now dying rapidly, hunger among the people. For these pastoralists, no cows, no money. They were ringing the alarm for help.
On the upside, all villages have food gardens, producing various vegetables (a White Mountain initiative). With our addition of maize flour and cooking oil they can make Ugali (sticky maize porridge) and feed their families. Kilimanjaro provides underground fresh water. But having no or a defect borehole-waterwell is a death sentence. And these problems also exist.
This is the current situation, broadly speaking. And what that means is this:
“To continue building on our long term future we must now first conquer the immediate threat to our existence.”
With the rain season ahead of us, now expected in November/December, the Maasai White Mountain Community have, in communication with us, indicated what is needed to get through this crisis.
We hope you can find it in your heart to support the amazing Maasai White Mountain Community, who have been and still are resilient and relentless in their pursuit to guard one of the most magic places on our planet Earth. And please share this message where you see fit.
Be well and know peace,
Frank Heckman,
Leo van der Vlist
