Why A Property Worth Millions Was Returned To The Tongva Tribe | LAist – California

The Altadena property was donated by Sharon Alexander, whose grandparents purchased the parcel as a young couple. When she inherited it in 2015, Alexander — who lives in the South Bay and has no interest in moving — decided to give it back to the Tongva tribe, whose members lived in the area we now call Los Angeles for at least 10,000 years.

“I didn’t want somebody to move in and … destroy the property,” said Alexander. “It’s quite special. And what my grandparents used it for was quite special. And I just thought it should go to somebody that’s going to honor that vision.”

It’s one of the first private land returns to Native Americans in the Los Angeles area. The process of transferring the property hasn’t been without its challenges, but now, both giver and receivers hope it serves as a place for healing.

♫ Monday, Monday ♫ (Redux)

Filosofa's Word

Another Monday, another Monday song!  Don’t know how much longer I’ll keep this up, but at least for this week and next week, I have Monday songs to play!

While awaiting the release of California Dreamin’, band member Denny Doherty was prodding songwriter John Phillips to come up with some new material. Phillips said he would come back in the morning with “A song with universal appeal.”  Monday, Monday was that song, which Phillips said took him all of about 20 minutes to write.

Interestingly, Doherty, who sang lead on this song for The Mamas & the Papas thought very little of Monday Monday when they recorded it.

“Nobody likes Monday, so I thought it was just a song about the working man. Nothing about it stood out to me; it was a dumb f–kin’ song about a day of the week.”

As you can imagine, he was taken…

Okinawa’s Typhoon + The Emperor’s plans

Pacific Paratrooper

Okinawa typhoon damage

14 August, the Emperor made a recording to be played over the Japanese radio stating that their government had surrendered to the Allied powers and to request that his people cooperate with the conquerors. The fanatics, mainly Army officers and also known as die-hards or ultras, attempted to confiscate the prepared discs and claim that the Emperor had been coerced into accepting the Potsdam Declaration. People died in this mini revolution and others committed hara-kiri when it failed. Some enemy pilots continue to fly their Zeros as American planes went over Japan.

Minbari Mondays (B5:s4e17) “The Face of The Enemy”: Trust vs. Differences

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

I love the juxtaposition of Garibaldi and Captain Sheridan’s voices in the opening credits, which so makes sense, now:

Garibaldi: “The year is 2261”

Sheridan: “The place: Babylon 5”

And I love these ship names!!

So we are headed into the beginning of the endgame…

Lyta, Dr. Franklin, and the human cargo they have chosen to sacrifice are on their way to Mars, where Garibaldi has betrayed Captn Sheridan’s trust “for everyone’s good,” despite being aware that

“the last guy got 30 pieces of silver for the same job.”

We see much suffering in this episode, both from the ‘good guys’ and bad. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which is which. As with life. Almost no issue is ever simply binary.

But Lyta Alexander seems to have the worse of the lot -having to actively sacrifice her own ‘kind’ while working to endure hostile suspicion, and trying to explain what…

Jolly “Fat Bear” Monday!

Filosofa's Word

Good Monday morning, friends!  I hope you all had a relaxing and peaceful weekend and that you’re ready to face another week!  Mine was good … nothing exciting, but then these days I prefer ‘normal’ to ‘exciting’ anyway.  Joyful has been cooking up something in the kitchen this morning, so let’s grab a snack and go in search of some fun to bring smiles to start the week on the right foot … or the left foot … either one is good.

This is the 6th day in Fat Bear Week, which runs from October 5th thru October 11th.  Seems a bit odd to me that the week is from Wednesday thru Tuesday, but I guess perhaps bears have a different calendar than humans do!  If you want to know more about Fat Bear week, check out my post in 2018, or this article about…
