Wattle and Red Earth Collective kicks up its heels for National Heritage Week

Petchary's Blog

October is always the month when Jamaicans turn their attention to their cultural heritage. National Heroes Day is Monday, October 17, 2022, at the end of Heritage Week, which begins on October 8 with an Interfaith Service at the University of the West Indies Chapel (I like this). President of the Crown Council of Ethiopia, His Imperial Highness, Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie, will be the nation’s special guest for Heritage Week.

But our national heritage is about more than National Heroes and special guests, important as they may be. It is also about the corners of our island where traditional practices survive (or try to) – not in the limelight so much, but all important. A year ago, the Wattle and Red Earth WARE Collective held a Virtual Art Auction. It was very well supported, raising US$15,000 towards the repurposing and reassembling of their very first Spanish Wall…

Trickle-down Truss is carrying on the dirty work of Thatcher, Blair and Osborne | Yanis Varoufakis | The Guardian

These recipients of the banker’s extra money have a long track record of not investing in actual productive capacity. Why would they, when the masses out there can’t afford to buy new, high-value products? Instead, big businesses use any funds that come their way either to buy back their own shares (to boost their share price and, consequently, their bonuses) or to speculate in the derivatives market or in real estate. The dirty secret behind the zombie idea of trickle-down economics is that only one thing can prevent the vicious financial cycle from spinning out of control: the government’s (and, sometimes, the central bank’s) power to feed it.

Start of Year 5783: Last Two Parshiot of the Torah, On Doing Better

Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

This week we’ll hear Parashat VaYelech, and then Ha’azinu, at the end of the Torah.

These last two parshiot of the Torah essentially are the founding leader handing over the mantle to his protege, while telling the people that they will certainly fail, but that they could Do Better. If only they wanted to.

Project Do Better is founded on the idea that by building empathy while educating around community mutual aid and public infrastructure, we can build a world that does indeed Do Better, starting right now.

I look forward to hearing your opinions on this matter, Thoughtful Readers.

We can really Do Better.

-Shira

Marii Freire

Vivaldi translation: Silence is an enemy?

No doubt. Although there are those who say that silence saves. The silence, in my opinion, corroborates the high rate of deaths (femicide). Brazil ranks 5th in the world ranking of women’s deaths.
