European countries see early signs of autumn COVID-19 rise | CIDRAP

UK sees rises in hospitalization, positive tests

In Britain, Susan Hopkins, MBBCh, chief medical officer at the Health Security Agency, in a statement yesterday said COVID-19 rates are still low, but data from the past 7 days shows a rise in hospitalizations and a rise in positive tests reported from the community.

“For those eligible, the time to get your autumn booster is now. Getting a booster will give your immune system time to build up your protection against being severely ill from COVID-19 as we move into winter,” she said.

In a snapshot of COVID activity in the European region, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said it has observed increasing transmission over the past 2 weeks. COVID is becoming more widespread in some countries, especially affecting people ages 65 and older. Though levels are still low, the rising activity is starting to affect hospital and intensive care unit indicators, with limited reported impact on mortality.

“Changes in population mixing following the summer break are likely to be the main driver of these increases, with no indication that they are caused by changes in the distribution of circulating variants,” the ECDC said, adding that the epidemiologic patterns it’s seeing are consistent with earlier forecasts.

Here’s Why Meghan McCain Was Wrong for Coming for Stacey Abrams on Twitter

The sound you hear on the ultrasound is the machine translating electrical impulses from the embryo into what sounds like a heartbeat. It’s not a real heartbeat because, at that stage, an embryo doesn’t have a beating heart.

But to be totally fair here, McCain isn’t alone in this misunderstanding. Politicians in several states passed fetal heartbeat bills over the last few years. And I get the confusion. It’s really hard to explain to folks who think they’re hearing their babies’ heartbeats for the first time that it’s all just one big misunderstanding, but there’s a little less leeway when it comes to politicians and public figures.

GOP Yanks Ad Buy For Ohio Candidate Who Lied About Military Service | HuffPost Latest News

A Republican candidate for a northwest Ohio congressional seat has seen his support vanish overnight, following an investigation that revealed he’d lied about deploying to Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The National Republican Congressional Committee on Thursday pulled nearly $1 million in ad reservations, originally booked to boost J.R. Majewski, a Trump-endorsed QAnon supporter who attended the Jan. 6 insurrection and has encouraged Republican states to secede from the union.

Tucker Carlson put out a potential hit list of hospital directors – LGBTQ Nation

On his show, Carlson took things a step further, showing the names and photos of VUMC’s board of directors onscreen while reading their names one-by-one, urging them to “do something to stop these crimes.”

The stunt has led social media users to wonder whether Calson’s rant could lead to violence against the hospital’s staff.

“Within the past few hours after Matt Walsh’s attack on Vanderbilt and Tucker Carlson’s coverage, users of 4chan and the Donald are calling for the outright murder of doctors. This is exactly what they want,” tweeted Harvard Law Cyberlaw clinical instructor Alejandra Caraballo.

Woman With Severe Chronic Pain Was Denied Medication for Being ‘Childbearing Age’

A New York woman says she was denied highly effective medication for a chronic, painful condition that’s caused her to contemplate suicide because her neurologist told her she could become pregnant, and the medication might cause birth defects—even though she never plans on having children. In a series of TikTok videos, Tara Rule (@pogsyy) included audio, in which the doctor explains to her that despite the facts that she uses protection, her partner would be willing to get a vasectomy, and she would have to get an abortion anyway (her hypothetical pregnancies would be high-risk), the risks to her hypothetical fetus trump her debilitating pain.
