Avian influenza continues its toll in California | WATTPoultry

A commercial broiler breeder flock and a commercial turkey flock – both in California – are the latest cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the United States.

According to information on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service webpage, the broiler breeder flock included 22,900 birds in Fresno County, while the turkey flock included 30,800 birds in Tuolumne County.

Fresno County has now had three confirmed cases of HPAI – all of which were broiler breeder flocks – with the first one being confirmed on August 22. Tuolumne County has now had four cases of HPAI, and all of those have involved commercial turkey flocks. That county’s first case was confirmed on August 26.

In total, California has had eight cases of HPAI in commercial poultry. The remaining one was confirmed in a flock of commercial meat turkeys in Sacramento County on August 30. The state has also had four cases of HPAI in backyard flocks. Including both the commercial and backyard poultry, California has lost an estimated 480,010 birds in 2022 as a result of the avian influenza outbreak.

Nationwide, more than 40 million head of commercial poultry have been lost to HPAI in 2022.

Let’s chose life and peace for ourselves, refugees, and the planet…

Already said – I think about this often

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King:

“[W]e as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. When machines and computers, profit and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

“A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies…. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Let’s chose life and peace for ourselves, refugees, and the planet…

Imprisoned

Kaushal Kishore

For a long time
I have been imprisoned in this cage,
which people affectionately call
the home library,
lying beside my friends
I keep sobbing at my loneliness,
no one picks me up,
no one bothers to see
how hard was my every word
threaded by someone…

Those who used to read me,
who used to hide secrets in me,
and who used to swear by me,
are lost somewhere in devices
like mobile, iPad and kindle,
they don’t even have time
and will to see
that the beautiful flowers
they had kept inside my pages
for a purpose,
have since reduced to skeletons,
was I made for this purpose?

When a new friend joins me
in this cage,
for a while I envy
for its brilliant effulgence,
looking at the dust above me,
but I know very well
that it will also end up
facing the same fate,
who…

Parashat Shoftim, and the Rule of Law — Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

Parashat Shoftim /שׁוֹפְטִיםפרשת      This week we read about judges, and about the rules of warfare, among other things.   The very existence of such rules indicates that there are certain levels of compassion which we are required to extend even to our enemies.  This set of laws having been written several thousand years ago, […]

♫ Bring It On Home To Me ♫ (Redux) — Filosofa’s Word

It’s been a while since I played some Sam Cooke, hasn’t it?  Like a few others in my repertoire, Cooke is always good for a nice, mellow sound.  I have played this one only once, almost exactly three years ago on September 4th, 2019. This song, written by Cooke, was released on May 8, 1962 […]

Saturday Surprise — Meet Wally!!! — Filosofa’s Word

You’ve all heard of Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) right?  If a person is going through a very difficult time, for whatever reason, and is suffering from depression, sometimes the company of a pet can bring that person out of his darkness.  I fully believe in this … one of our ‘feral five’, Oliver aka Ollie, […]
