drifting spirits

DRIFTING SPIRITS

along with a period of depression
drifting spirits
wavering spectres through a stifling sunrise
a Sun caked with dried blood
breathlessly hovers above the savage concrete tombs
in darkness
the drifting spirits trampled upon each other
viewed each other with suspicion
chilling barred owlets’ eyes
respiring what’s left of what faith has to offer
rampant growls of wolves
screams of the unjustified spirits
throngs of terrified insecurity
paralyzed spirits
via the repeated constant familiar flattery
the paralyzed spirits
via the age-old repeated deceit
the paralysed spirits
via an environment macerated by the stench of the mass
the spirits drifting
above the moving footprints across a starving meadow

The hero sat there crying

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

A poem in Vietnamese by Thái Hạo

The hero sat there crying

Each time a person lay down their life
we would rise one by one
pick up the battered old bullets
and throw them at each other

a nation in battle for thousand and thousands of years
gangs in a school yard
their forefinger the barrel of a gun
continuous rounds of laughter battered the foreheads of their classmates
the silent bullets in our memory
shifting
anxiously
a cemetery

The hero sat there crying
over the death of his nemesis
a dejected child going home
without an enemy to shoot at them

the sadness of peace
our nation
our heroes’ punishment

In Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, deforesters foot the bill for political campaigns

Half of Mato Grosso state legislators bankrolled by violators

In total, 62 candidates for governor, state legislator, federal legislator, senator, and alternative candidates were funded by environmental violators in elections in Mato Grosso. Of these, 19 were elected to office, including the current governor, businessman Mauro Mendes (União Brasil party), who is running for reelection.

The same analysis also reveals the influence that these elected politicians have had in office. Since 2019, they’ve occupied half of the state legislature, five of Mato Grosso’s eight seats in the lower House of Congress (known as the Chamber of Deputies), and one of its two seats in the upper House, the Senate.

Mato Grosso sits at the meeting point between three of Brazil’s most important biomes: the Amazon rainforest, Cerrado savanna, and Pantanal wetlands. It also recorded the most campaign donations from environmental violators in past elections, totaling almost 6 million reais ($1.5 million) as of 2018. It was followed by the states of Rondônia, with 4.3 million reais ($1.1 million); São Paulo, with 1.6 million reais ($411,000); and Tocantins, with 1.5 million reais ($385,000).

Urinary Tract Infections

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

Let’s look at something different for a change.

A new research report links high blood glucose levels to an increased risk of UTIs.(1)

Excess blood glucose suppresses a natural antibiotic in the body, psoriasin, which provides protection against these infections.

“Essentially, this is a protein that inhibits the binding of bacteria to epithelial cells andendothelial cells, and if these bacteria cannot bind to the epithelial cells of the bladder, then they may not grow. They will be inhibited from growth, and therefore they can’t propagate inside the bladder.”

“When bacteria propagate, that’s when infection occurs because essentially infection is an overgrowth of bacteria within an organ like the bladder, as opposed to a situation in which psoriasin would be inhibiting the growth of the bacteria.”

Dr. S. Adam Ramin

The study was conducted comparing diabetics to non-diabetics, but those with borderline blood glucose conditions should consider discussing this with…

Pollution Storm Made Worse By Storms – (Watch out Tampa…)

Phosphogypsum is radioactive and can contain uranium, thorium and radium, which decay into carcinogenic radon. In addition to these radioactive carcinogens, phosphogypsum and process water can contain heavy toxic metals like antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, mercury, nickel, silver, sulfur, thallium and zinc.

More than 1 billion tons of the radioactive and toxic waste have already been stored in these stacks, perched precariously atop the Floridan aquifer that supplies drinking water to about 10 million people.

Florida State Department of Environmental Protection records show that Piney Point has about 24 inches (60 centimeters) of rainfall capacity.

A big spill or leak could seriously damage rivers and other wetlands near any of the stacks.

“Phosphate companies have had over 50 years to figure out a way to dispose of the radioactive gypsum wastes in an acceptable manner, they have yet to do so,” according to the environmental nonprofit ManaSota-88. “The EPA should not permit phosphate wastes to be used in Florida landfills, or in construction or agricultural applications.”

The hurricane is expected to produce catastrophic storm surge, destructive winds, and flooding rainfall, The Weather Channel reports.

Where to dump our toxic waste only gets more complicated as our climate continues to change and storms become more intense.
