Drawing the wrong lessons from Sri Lanka’s organic farming experience (commentary)

Our research on the diets of long-term organic versus conventional tea farmers in Sri Lanka suggests that it is actually the established organic tea farmers who have done much better over the past two years. They receive a price premium for their product, have well-established internal supplies of high-quality organic compost to maintain their soils, and their tea yields are the same or better than those of conventional tea farmers.

Their steady earnings combined with vegetable gardens for home consumption mean that they have nutritious diets. This compares with conventional tea farmers who had to deal with the sudden loss of chemical fertilizer supplies last summer, struggled to find good-quality organic compost, and then saw declining yields, lower incomes, and poorer diets.

Video: Study Shows How Dogs Recognize Their Toys — FACE Foundation Blog

Lolsys Library

Our dogs love their toys, and many of them have favorite toys. Many dogs are also able to retrieve a particular toy when their owners name it, i.e., “Bring me Bear.” Researchers at the Family Dog Project, a Hungarian academic research institute that studies the behavioral and cognitive aspects of the dog-human relationship, recently examined[…]

Public Financial Knowledge Infrastructure: What is an SoL?

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

    Since no one seems to be jumping up and down to get this part of the Project started, I am beginning with a very basic post, meant to be useful for anyone wishing to give a 5-minute seminar at the Metro/Trolley/Bus stop.
   SoL  ==  Statute of Limitations
   Statutes of Limitations are time limits on the enforcement of laws, basically.  The kinds of SoLs that Project Do Better focuses on, in Phase I, are those related to debt.  Every state has a different set of SoLs for each of the 4 kinds of debts:
1.  revolving  or open, is credit card;
2.  written contract;
3.  verbal contract;
4.  promissory notes
        Many web sites list the various SoLs by state, but be sure to compare the SoL in your state with the online legal code of your state.
    Another crucial…

Carlos Drummond de Andrade

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

” Idade madura em olhos, receitas e pés, ela me invade

e ganho

Terms of Endearment

From Behind the Pen

Do you have a nickname? If you do, who gave it to you? Is it a pet name from your parents, your significant other, or a nickname you picked up in your youth?

My siblings and I never had nicknames, but we have had our share of family members who did. Of course, Bubba was one of the most common nicknames, but the sad thing about it, is that hardly anyone knew their real name, even after they died.

The 1983 movie “Terms of Endearment,” starring Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger, was about a mother and daughter’s on-again, off-again relationship. Yet Emma (Debra’s character) relies on her mother. Emma is dying, but she entrusts her mother with her three children. It’s a comical drama if you haven’t seen it yet.

When we think about the meaning of terms of endearment, we think about those pet words…
