This is a repeat of a post I published on this date last year. With all the efforts by certain states to whitewash the history of this nation, or to simply refrain from teaching our next generation about the history of the nation they live in, I think it is more important than ever before to be reminded of some parts of our past. Disturbing? Hell yes! But it happened and to ignore it is a crime … one that will have serious consequences in the future. And so, please bear with me as I tell you the story of Emmett Till once again …
It was sixty-seven years ago today that a 14-year-old boy, Emmett Till, was brutally murdered for the crime of being Black in a town called Money, Mississippi. You all know the story, but allow me to just quickly refresh your memories …
Emmett was from…

Loved the Isley Brothers… Shout… grin.
I was planning to do a different song tonight, one that I had not played here before, but time got away from me and it’s now well after 2:00 a.m. and I’d like to go to bed sometime, so I decided to redux this one from back in 2019, but have added a second version for your listening pleasure!
Earlier this evening, I was reading a transcript of a podcast, part of a fascinating series put together by Jonathan Capehart for The Washington Post called Voices of the Movement about how music propelled the Civil Rights movement. It’s a fascinating series in case you’re interested, and you can either listen to the podcast or read the transcript. Anyway, as I was reading, this song by the Isley Brothers literally popped into my head.
The Isley Brothers became one of the most successful acts of the ’70s, and also one of…

Certain Republicans in Congress obviously believe that We the People are stupid. The hue and cry over President Biden’s plan to forgive a portion of student loan debt for qualifying individuals is not only ludicrous, but insulting to the average Joe. Take, for example, Congressman Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania who made this statement:
“Asking plumbers and carpenters to pay off the loans of Wall Street advisors and lawyers isn’t just unfair. It’s also bad policy.”
Apparently, either Mike Kelly hasn’t been paying attention, or he’s pretty sure his constituents aren’t bright enough to have been paying attention, for the student loan forgiveness is only available to people making less than $125,000 per year and both wall street advisors and lawyers earn well over that mark, so they wouldn’t be eligible. Period.
Then there was ol’ Vern Buchanan, a member of the House of Representatives from Florida who said …
“As…

The George Dawson Middle School in the Carroll Independent School District in Texas is named for a man who was enslaved, learned to read at the age of 98, and died at 103.
The school board is now reviewing whether Dawson’s biography should be read by students at the school. After all, its references to slavery and segregation might defy the state law against teaching “critical race theory.”
When Dawson’s book was published, it was hailed as an inspiring story. Its title: “Life Is So Good.”
A book about the grandson of a slave who learned to read when he was 98 years old is currently under review for use in the school named after him in Southlake.
The book, “Life is So Good,” tells the story of George Dawson’s life, from segregation and the civil rights movement to learning to read at 98. It’s one of about 10…
