The UK Government’s regular pandemic press briefings have not used long COVID as an outcome to be factored in when communicating public health decisions. With sections of the government’s supporter base tending towards scepticism over COVID-19 control measures,

it was not only that counting long COVID was difficult but also that including long COVID in risk–benefit calculations could have been politically inconvenient. The direct hit to the workforce was not explicitly weighed in policy decisions, which often, and mistakenly, pitted public health against the economy.
