New York men who assaulted police on Jan. 6 sentenced to 44 months – The Washington Post

Two New York state men who led a mob that overwhelmed police at the perimeter of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — then bodysurfed over the top of the crowd at a building entrance and pepper-sprayed officers — were both sentenced Friday to 44 months in prison.

Cody Mattice, 29, of Greece, N.Y., and James Mault, 30, of Brockport, N.Y., both wept as they stood before Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell and asked for leniency, apologizing for their actions and saying they hoped to return soon to their families and young children. But Howell noted that prosecutors had already cut them a reasonable deal by dropping charges that could have led to far more prison time, and she imposed the sentences requested by the government. Only four other Jan. 6 defendants have been sentenced to longer prison terms.

Text messages obtained by the FBI showed that Mattice and Mault planned for violence on Jan. 6, initially expecting resistance from antifa. They texted family members during the mayhem, and then congratulated each other in the days after the riot, which temporarily halted the certification of the presidential election.

In a Twist, Old Coal Plants Help Deliver Renewable Power. Here’s How. – The New York Times

Across the country, aging and defunct coal-burning power plants are getting new lives as solar, battery and other renewable energy projects, partly because they have a decades-old feature that has become increasingly valuable: They are already wired into the power grid.

The miles of high-tension wires and towers often needed to connect power plants to customers far and wide can be costly, time consuming and controversial to build from scratch. So solar and other projects are avoiding regulatory hassles, and potentially speeding up the transition to renewable energy, by plugging into the unused connections left behind as coal becomes uneconomical to keep burning.

In Illinois alone, at least nine coal-burning plants are on track to become solar farms and battery storage facilities in the next three years. Similar projects are taking shape in Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Maryland. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, two retired coal plants along the coast are being repurposed to connect offshore wind turbines to the regional electrical grids.

Ok, this collage keeps giving me 5 separate images when I click on the jpg in Media, despite having saved it as one image.

Ok, so it will let me do an insert, but I cannot seem to get the link url from WP media. Interesting. But, as a Project logo, how is it?

What do you think our world would look like if we really tried to build an empathetic society?

♫ Nights In White Satin ♫ (Redux) — Filosofa’s Word

A comment or two lately mentioned the Moody Blues, and while I recently played their song, “Go Now“, I haven’t played this one for almost two years! Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 in Swindon, and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. […]

Filosofa Is Grrrrrrrrrrrrowling! — Filosofa’s Word

When I heard yesterday of so-called Democratic Senator Joe Manchin’s betrayal, I growled and damn near threw something (but, I’d just have to clean up the mess, so I held back).  Once again, Manchin seems to be the fly in the ointment, seems for all intents and purposes to be against the people of this […]

Sri Lankan president arrives in Singapore after fleeing protests | Free Malaysia Today (FMT)

Singapore’s foreign ministry confirmed Rajapaksa had been allowed to enter the city-state but insisted it was for a “private visit”.

“He has not asked for asylum and neither has he been granted any asylum. Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum,” it said in a statement.

A handful of Sri Lankans were waiting in one of the airport’s arrival areas to voice their anger at Rajapaksa and the economic crisis engulfing their homeland.
