Sri Lanka’s Acting Leader Declares State of Emergency as Protests Swell – The New York Times (Me: sad turn of events for Sri Lanka to have someone who was going to resign and now call protesters of incompetent rule “fascists…” They – the old leadership – have bankrupted the nation.)

Protesters did not back down after Mr. Wickremesinghe, the prime minister — who had said over the weekend that he would step down — assumed the presidency. The crowd outside his office swelled. They broke through and took over the building; another group took over the state broadcaster. In his first address as acting president, Mr. Wickremesinghe declared a curfew and referred to some protesters as a “fascist threat.”
