Heart Exercise

Doctors suggest
brisk walking, swimming,
situps and push-ups
to keep the heart healthy,
but the best exercise
for the heart
is to bend down
and lift someone up…

♫ We Are The World ♫ (Redux)
I have reduxed this one every year since I first played it in … I think 2018. It carries a message that we all need to hear from time to time. Right now, all over the world, troubles abound. Thinking of Ukraine and Ukrainians at the moment, with their struggles to save their country from an evil wanna-be emperor. Climate change is bringing disastrous effects to people around the globe, to food and water supplies, and the list goes on. Here in the U.S., we are grieving for the lives lost over the past month in multiple mass shootings, especially the lives of 19 children lost in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Our politicians are playing the already massive divide, further dividing us and some are attempting to subjugate the people of the U.S. to a dictatorial leader. People all over the globe are suffering in one way or…

Dozens have died in mass shootings since Uvalde. The Right doesn’t care | openDemocracy
America is so fundamentally unserious about addressing the gun violence pandemic that we allow gun manufacturers to stoke the flames of our not-so-cold culture war with abandon, literally selling guns inscribed with Bible verses and given unsubtly racist and Islamophobic names like “the Crusader,” as Spike’s Tactical calls its AR-15 style rifle.
The gun is stamped with Psalm 144: “Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.”
As history professor Thomas Lecaque observes, the gun is also marked with a Templar cross, and its three safety settings are called “Pax Pacis, Bellum, and Deus Vult” – that is, “Peace, War, and God Wills It.”
Imagery associated with the Knights Templar and the phrase “deus vult” is commonly used in alt-right memes, meaning the gun’s branding is unsubtly designed to appeal to both conservative Christians and white supremacists (groups with which there is, of course, considerable overlap).

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
I read this book long ago, in Brittany, and this book goes well with the islands like that of Sein. It was a relatively interesting treasure hunt, as I recall, with “une fille formidable” who gets kidnapped at the start of the book, and has an important role at the finish. That “impressive girl” was the most impressive part of the book, sorry, I’ve forgotten most of the plot. Just don’t read it if you are afraid of rats!

Chilly Bears: Brain Freeze from a Paper Cup 🥶

Here is a refreshing childhood memory I thought about, that cooled me off as I faced a hot muggy day this week. Who would have thought a simple homemade frozen treat would bring back some brain-chilling memories? 🥶 Look out summer, it’s time to get creative with some homemade childhood treats.
Chilly Bears
We were drenched in the sizzling heat
a heat understood in a southern summer
parched lips, dry mouths
foreheads dripping with sweat
oh, what a relief as we spotted our rescue
we danced with excitement
like kernels of popcorn jumping in a popper
and there they were, paper cups
filled with flavored frozen kool-aid
ready to satisfy parched tongues
reaching for that sweet frozen treat
some called them ice cups
others said they were freeze cups
kids today call them popsicles with a stick
but…

January 6th Hearings And A Snippet
I mostly want to talk a bit about last night’s televised hearings, but also have another snippet … or maybe two … who knows? 🤷
January 6th Committee hearings
I watched the televised hearings of the January 6th committee tonight, and I have to tell you, by the time they took a 10-minute recess after the first hour, I was more than ready for a break! I was shaking and couldn’t catch my breath after watching some of that footage. I’ve never wanted to hurt somebody more in my life than I wanted to hurt those ugly people storming the Capitol.
The hearing was interesting … nay, fascinating … but not much new information has been presented as yet. Still, watching the first-hand account by the police officer, Caroline Edwards, who was wounded, knocked unconscious, then resumed her duties to protect the Capitol upon regaining consciousness, only to…
