Cutting works by Russian artists is ‘stupid’, says Pussy Riot member | Pussy Riot | The Guardian

Maria “Masha” Alyokhina, one of Pussy Riot’s founding members, was responding to a string of decisions by cultural and intellectual institutions to cut Russian works, including the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra removing pieces by the composer Tchaikovsky from its programme, the Royal Opera House eliminating the Bolshoi ballet from its summer season, an Italian university cancelling lectures on Dostoevsky, and Netflix paused an adaptation of Anna Karenina.

“I think it’s just stupid,” Alyokhina said. “It’s not Tchaikovsky who invaded Ukraine. There’s no sense banning Tchaikovsky, but there will be sense in banning all Russian oil and gas.”

She added that as a Russian artist performing in Europe she hadn’t experienced any Russophobia since the start of the war. “It’s just irrelevant – we should be united as an artistic community to build the anti-war movement.”

Svetlana Alexievich, the Belarussian Nobel prize winner who writes in Russian, recently told the Hay festival that a major Hollywood film studio had cancelled an adaptation of her book the Unwomanly Face of War on grounds that images of Russian women in military uniforms “wouldn’t be accepted by audiences in the west”, although she argued that the book is about the universal human experience of war.

Alyokhina was speaking to coincide with the inclusion of her group’s Riot Days show in the Gulbenkian Arts Centre at the University of Kent in autumn. She said the show, in which she performs with fellow members Olga Borisova and Diana Burkot, was a “statement of solidarity with Ukraine” that shows “Putin’s regime from the inside”.

In a First, Tribes Will Jointly Manage a National Monument – The New York Times

Bears Ears National Monument, whose red-rock landscape sprawls across more than 1.3 million acres in southeastern Utah, will become the nation’s first national monument to be managed jointly by the federal government and Native American tribes, officials said on Monday.

The arrangement was ratified in an agreement that was signed on Saturday and commemorated with the unveiling of a new Bears Ears welcome sign, which includes the insignia of the five tribes that will help run the monument, the Interior Department said in a statement.

“Today, instead of being removed from a landscape to make way for a public park, we are being invited back to our ancestral homelands to help repair them,” Carleton Bowekaty, the lieutenant governor of the Zuni Pueblo tribe, said in the statement.

Mr. Bowekaty is the co-chair of the Bears Ears Commission, a group that also includes representatives of four other tribes that at some point were driven off the land: the Hopi, the Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation.

Israel must release the Shireen Abu Akleh probe findings – editorial – The Jerusalem Post

Israel Police announced last Thursday that they had concluded an investigation into police conduct during the funeral procession of Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in Jerusalem last month. But instead of releasing the findings of their probe, the police issued only a statement, quoting Insp.-Gen. Kobi Shabtai as saying that Abu Akleh’s funeral had been a “complex event.”

This is simply not good enough.

As the world closely monitors Israel’s investigations into the circumstances of both Abu Akleh’s killing and the violence at her funeral, Israel needs to publish its findings – and the sooner the better.
