Chronic pain: The ‘unbearable’ condition affecting one in four – BBC News
An exclusive survey of over 4,000 adults aged 16-75 for BBC News, carried out by research company Ipsos, suggests that a quarter of people in the UK are living with chronic pain – an often hidden and misunderstood condition.
And pain specialists warn the health service is not set up to deal with such complex conditions. They say the treatments on offer are decades behind the science, leaving millions of patients without the support they need to manage their pain.
Chronic pain – defined as pain that lasts longer than three months – can drastically change people’s lives. It can be caused by a physical problem – such as a slipped disc, but can also occur with no clear cause – known as primary pain. It destroys careers, breaks up relationships, steals independence and denies people the futures they had imagined.

The Tick That Causes a Meat Allergy Is on the Move – The New York Times
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 2004 and 2019, the total number of tick-borne diseases in the United States more than doubled. In the meantime, other devastating pests that were previously constrained by cooler temperatures — like the dengue virus-carrying tiger mosquito, or the cabbage-munching harlequin bug — have also marched forth beyond their historic ranges.
“We’re venturing into uncharted waters in so many dimensions with climate change,” Dr. Raupp said.
By nature, ticks are travelers; they attach themselves to hosts in order to suck their blood, hitching a ride in the process. Scientists say an explosion in the population of the white-tailed deer, their primary host, has also helped them to spread.

‘We comforted the kids, crossed ourselves, and bid our lives farewell’ Three Azovstal steel plant workers tell the story of their escape — Meduza
The Azovstal steel plant remains the sole point of resistance against the Russian invaders in Mariupol. Though fighting has been ongoing outside of the plant for almost two months, none of the civilians hiding inside were evacuated until April 30. Azovstal workers Ilya and Pavlo (names changed) were some of the first civilians to escape the plant; they’re now safe in Zaporozhye. They spoke to Meduza along with Azovstal HR director Ivan Goltvenko, who left the city on March 9 and has been helping others escape ever since.
