    1. Several of my classmates from secondary school never knew their fathers or lost uncles or aunts in WWII. A friend who supplied film to the Smithsonian gift shops lost all his relatives in German death camps. He told me his story after I asked him about the number tattoo on his forearm. A co-worker at the museum shops lost most of her family during the Armenian Genocide by the Turks. One of my uncles survived a German grenade but had to have numerous operations over the years to remove bits of it as they moved around internally.
