Cecília Meireles
[…]
Chega, porém, do fundo tempo,
uma infinita voz de desgosto,
e com o asco da decadência,
entre o que seríeis e fostes,
murmura imensa: ” Os pusilânimes!”
“Os pusilanimes!” repete
o breve passante do mundo,
quando conhece a vossa história!

Two Sides #poetry #heat #2faces

I was Janus once
a shiny side
a muted side
put all happiness aside
It wasn’t me
it certainly wasn’t you
for one day I was famous
then a hot wind blew it away
I spun the coin
heads or tales
to be or not to be
there’s no answer to the question
but there are always two sides

Time Passage, and Can Colors & Curves Help Sally Learn Greek?
Context, Critical Thinking, Continuous Learning: Project Do Better
How on earth can a Colored dressmaker, specifically our Sally, from 1838, hope to learn Greek? You may remember her from my historical fantasy WiP Who By Fire.
Well, with a lot of hope, determination, and some help from her future, we can imagine some ways. Starting with colors, and curves.
( Photo is from my Languages wall, removing a note, with explanation and a Janjo Fantoso video link, each week until all notes are done…)
Visual learners will notice right away the curving arrangement of the main 5 notes: these were taped to my wall, spaced out a bit more, but still connected. When you see the meanings of these words, you’ll also see why I’ve arranged them this way. For me, this method helps me to learn the words much…

Facebook Slammed for Spreading Putin’s Russian Propaganda in NATO’s East – Slashdot
Slovakia’s eastern border touches Ukraine’s western border — and Saturday Bloomberg uncovered an emerging controversy. “A flood of posts pushing misinformation in Slovakia is putting the spotlight on Facebook for facilitating the spread of pro-Russian theories on the war in neighboring Ukraine, ranging from claims that Kyiv is secretly developing biological weapons to questioning whether President Vladimir Putin’s invasion even happened at all.”The dispute took center stage this week when members of the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence called out Meta and its chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, for facilitating the dangerous spread of pro-Russia disinformation in the country of 5.3 million. According to the GLOBSEC security think tank, the intensity of false messages is worse here than anywhere else in ex-communist central Europe. That has buoyed support for Putin, with more than a quarter of Slovaks saying they back his actions, even as the administration in Bratislava tries to shelter the refugees and send weapons to Kyiv to aid in its defense….

They discover the secret chamber of an ancient neo-Assyrian fertility cult under a house in eastern Turkey – Archeology, Ancient and Medieval History – Terrae Antiqvae
Başbük divine procession panel with drawings of overlapping interpretive figures (photo by M. Önal; interpretive drawings by M. Önal, based on laser scanning by Cevher Mimarlık).
A failed looting has led a team of archaeologists to an underground Iron Age complex with depictions of atypical rock art located under a house in Başbük, Turkey. The finding, which is reported in the magazine Antiquity, “represents a rare processional panel […] subsection on the rock wall in which eight gods and goddesses of the Iron Age appear. “ As the researchers describes, the site may have been used for a fertility cult during the first millennium BC
The artistic style of the Neo-Assyrian Empire would have been adapted by local groups
Although the panel was discovered in Turkey, and the work of art includes inscriptions in the local language, Aramaic the style of the deities is clearly Assyrian, a culture that originated hundreds of kilometers further east, in Mesopotamia, and later expanded to Anatolia between 900 and 600 B.C
Mayor declares state of emergency to block baby formula price gouging – Gothamist
The emergency declaration, signed on Sunday, aims to empower the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to crack down on sellers that are price gouging the hard-to-find infant formula. The agency said it has received several complaints of excessive prices in recent weeks.
Families have been scrambling to find infant formula after a voluntary recall from the manufacturer Abbott Laboratories, which controls roughly half the market, in February. Throughout the tri-state area, an estimated 43% of retailers are out of baby formula, according to the Adams administration.

Texas girl, 15, trafficked from Mavericks game in Dallas; 8 arrested in Oklahoma: police | Fox News
“The systems and organizations involved in this case continually failed the victim. She should never have had contact with the man at the Mavericks game. The Dallas Police should have worked quickly to investigate leads and locate the teenager before she was trafficked to Oklahoma,” Fortenberry said in a statement. “The Extended Stay America hotel in Oklahoma City put profits ahead of people by turning a blind eye to the sexual exploitation occurring right before their eyes. This victim’s life will forever be changed. We hope to hold accountable those responsible and create change within these organizations so that this never happens to any other child.”Source: Texas girl, 15, trafficked from Mavericks game in Dallas; 8 arrested in Oklahoma: police | Fox News
Successfully fighting Covid-19 means investing in public health and uniform messaging – Vox (Me: GOPCovidDeathCult still beleaguers American fight for life and health)
With the politicization of Covid-19, public health messaging around the pandemic in the US has faced an uphill battle — and it shows. Beyond the recent hikes in hospitalizations, as of May 20, only 66.5% of the US population had been fully vaccinated — lagging behind other wealthy nations like France, Japan, and the UK — while just 46.4% had received a booster, according to CDC data.
But in a country where public health recommendations like getting vaccinated and wearing masks have become the cruxes of political debates, getting citizens on board with public health measures is easier said than done.
