Hackers were focusing on insurance companies. Now they are shifting downstream to medical practices and clinics.
New reports of breaches in Indiana and Alabama have exposed personal information from 310,000 patients. The organizations involved are Norwood Clinic, a practice with 25 physicians, and Central Indiana Orthopedic. Smaller organizations like this will have less sophisticated defenses against hacking than either major insurers or hospitals. So it’s no surprise that this is happening.
What is a surprise is how this came to light. These breaches have not yet appeared on the Federal Health and Human Services HIPAA breach website.
