Scott Shaw, 54, the former Director of Sports Medicine and athletic trainer at San Jose State University, has been charged today with civil rights violations for engaging in sexual misconduct with female student-athletes under the guise of treating them for their injuries.
The charges allege that between 2017 and 2020, Shaw violated the civil rights of four students who played on women’s athletics teams by touching their breasts and buttocks without their consent and without a legitimate purpose. Shaw, as a state employee for the California State University system, is further alleged to have acted under color of law when he sexually assaulted the victims.
Shaw faces a maximum of six years in prison if convicted of all counts. However, any sentence following a conviction would be imposed by a court only after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence.
Shelley Johnson, aka Gold Mouth, 40, of Macon, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to participate in an animal fighting venture before U.S. District Judge Tilman E. “Tripp” Self III. Johnson faces a maximum five years of imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for June 7.
According to court documents, law enforcement investigated a criminal organization involved in both cocaine distribution and organized dog fighting based out of Roberta, Georgia, which extended into North Georgia, Florida and Alabama from May 2019 until February 2020. In February 2020, law enforcement executed 15 residential search warrants and seized more than 150 dogs that were being used for organized dog-fighting. A 136-count indictment was unsealed on Jan. 29, 2021, charging 11 individuals with various criminal activities. Three other individuals, including Johnson, were charged by criminal information.

Don’t waste time on self pity. Whenever we find ourselves excluded and isolated we have to remember that we are powerful and capable of extricating ourselves from every imaginable situation. Answers to life’s problems aren’t held outside of ourselves, the answers lies within. We just have to find time for solace and reflection.

Axios tells us:
Giant spiders expected to drop from sky across the East Coast this spring
An invasive species of spider the size of a child’s hand is expected to “colonize” the entire East Coast this spring by parachuting down from the sky, researchers at the University of Georgia announced last week.
Why it matters: Large Joro spiders — millions of them — are expected to begin “ballooning” up and down the East Coast as early as May. Researchers have determined that the spiders can tolerate cold weather, but are harmless to humans as their fangs are too small to break human skin.
- The Joro spider is native to Japan but began infiltrating the U.S. in 2013, concentrating in the southeast and specifically Georgia, according to NPR. They fanned out across the state using their webs as tiny, terrifying parachutes to travel with the wind.

We’ve all heard much talk of whether or not the U.S. should establish a ‘no-fly zone’ over Ukraine to protect the country from attack from Russian planes. Representative Adam Kinzinger was among the first to call for a limited no-fly zone and since then, others have jumped on the bandwagon. Even Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy has asked NATO to establish such a no-fly zone. But is it really a good idea? I’ve read the pros and cons and I think Nicholas Kristof sums it up best in his latest newsletter …
Here’s Why I’m Against a No-Fly Zone
It increases the risk of a Russian-American war, even of a nuclear exchange. That doesn’t seem worth it.
Nicholas Kristof, March 10
Almost nothing would be as satisfying right now as shooting down a Russian Mig that was bombing a Ukrainian apartment block or hospital. So it’s understandable that there are growing calls…

I was a Census supervisor many moons ago – 1980 and also worked to wrap up East Detroit that year so they could end on time. My area had less than 1% error and we got Detroit done on time and within accepted error range. New surveys on various topics are done every year. They still do excellent work.
Reading the press release today about the accuracy of the 2020 Census isn’t for the faint of heart. If you lack a good grasp of statistical concepts, this release is going to appear to be written in Martian.
The Census Bureau regularly conducts followup analyses to examine the accuracy of the reported data. These analyses include both an independent survey as well as an examination of data on vital statistics (births, deaths and immigration) to see how closely the results of those efforts match the numbers from the Census itself.
Why does the Census matter so much?
The basic gist of…

The Transportation Security Administration will extend its mask mandate for airplanes and other public transportation through mid-April, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention works with federal agencies to revise mask policies, the two agencies announced on Thursday.
The requirement will extend at least through April 18 at C.D.C.’s recommendations, and will apply to public transportation and transportation hubs. Under the T.S.A.’s rule, passengers on airplanes, buses and trains and at airports and transit stations must wear masks.
