A young friend and his wife stopped by to help Jim with a plumbing problem– the wife and I sat to talk for a while. They have two children, 7 and 8, in school. We were able to agree that all this hullabaloo over covid-19 has become by far too politicized. She doesn’t want their kids to grow up ‘scared of the world’ nor unable to socialize normally. I understand her point and agree. If only she and I could be examples of what our political process needs to be – a give and take kitchen table chat…no name-calling, no diminishing of the other to make a point.

Moderne Odysseen
Wie eine andere moderne Odyssee, in der sich Massen menschlicher Körper ständig in alle möglichen Richtungen bewegen, das Abenteuer von Odysseus scheint aktueller denn je.
Die Chronik der Odyssee ist eine jener Geschichten, die sich immer wieder wiederholt, sogar vielleicht öfter als jede andere Geschichte in der Menschheit. Die Geschichte der Odyssee ist eine jener wunderbaren sprachlichen Metaphern, die sich fast automatisch und gleichzeitig so unerwartet in einem Gespräch erscheinen und Parallelassoziationen und Gedankenketten aktivieren. Die lange Reise des Odysseus kann auf viele Arten interpretiert werden; Tatsächlich wird es oft als Abenteuer, als Leiden, Risiko oder heroisches Ereignis interpretiert. Diese Interpretationen spiegeln viele der heutigen Situationen wider. Die Geschichte von Odyssey könnte auch eine moderne Metapher für die ständige Bewegung, insbesondere der Jugend, in andere, neue Welten sein.

Kula koju je projektovao Gistav Ajfel, za potrebe Svjetske izložbe 1889. godine, ostala je da i danas dominira na horizontu Pariza kao makroskopski znak iskrene nade u progres i modernizaciju i jedino je djelo, pored mnogih drugih, po kome je “gospodin Ajfel” postao poznat u čitavom svijetu. Svjetske izložbe, koje su pokrenute u Londonu 1851. godine, karakterišu čitavu drugu polovinu XIX vijeka. U narednom vijeku prorijedile su se i, prije svega, nisu više imale značaj kao one prethodne. Njihov glavni cilj bio je da odmjere mogućnosti nove tehnologije i da ih s ponosom svima prikažu. U ti svrhu, pripremani su izložbeni paviljoni i složene pokazne arhitektonske konstrukcije, koje su trajale nešto duže od vremena održavanja same izložbe. “Expo” je značajno uticao i na ubrzanje tehnike izgradnje koja je pratila skraćeno vrijeme impozantnih, ali obavezno brzih priprema.
