…For the past thirty years, Antarctica warmed up three times faster than the rest of the world. In February 2020, he beat the 20 ° C A record.
This disorder is caused by climate change and directly influences the behavior of some species. This is the case of Gentoo penguins, which are migrating to breed in regions further south of the continent, as researchers at Stony Brook University (United States) verified on an expedition by the NGO Greenpeace.
Scientists discovered a penguin colony on Andersson Island, on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula – a mountainous region close to South America. Until then, this area was too cold for penguins, who prefer milder temperatures to raise their young. Before, only one nest had been found in such a southern location. Now, the researchers have counted 75 puppies.
For the first time, scientists explored parts of the peninsula on foot where penguin colonies had been detected via satellite. Second Heather Lynch, the researcher who led the expedition, mapping these areas helps to understand how animals are responding to climate change :
“We are finding Gentoo penguins almost everywhere we look – more evidence that climate change is dramatically changing the species mix in the Antarctic Peninsula,” said Lynch…
