Cockpit Country, Jamaica: “This is an environmental and social justice issue”

Petchary's Blog

There is much more to be said about the recent announcement on bauxite mining in the Cockpit Country, which I wrote about in a post earlier this week. Now environmental activist and Founder of the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) Diana McCaulay (@dmccaulay) has shared her thoughts in a fairly long Twitter thread, which I am reproducing below.

There are some facts that we must always keep in mind; and there are questions that we should also keep in the forefront of our thoughts, and keep asking until (who knows?) we may get an answer. At this point, there are still many information gaps.

So here is Ms. McCaulay’s thread:

The Jamaican Government is a 51% shareholder of Noranda, the applicant for a mining lease and environmental permit for bauxite mining in the contested area of Cockpit Country is the Jamaican…

Ah!

É do alto do sentir desse alheamento

É do alto do pensar desse esquecer

Bits of This, That, and The Other

Filosofa's Word

Today, I promise no posts about January 6 or the former guy.

Yesterday I let out a “WHOOP” when the wheels of justice, after turning very slowly, finally picked up momentum and rendered three sentences that were fair and well-deserved.  The three killers of Ahmaud Arbery were all sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for father and son Greg and Travis McMichael.  Good riddance to bad rubbish.  The other, William “Roddie” Bryan, will be eligible for parole after 30 years because he did cooperate with police and according to his lawyer, showed remorse for his actions on that fateful day.

Some will say this is justice, and it is right and just for the killers, and it is justice in one sense for Arbery’s family but make no mistake … this is still not justice for Ahmaud Arbery.  Mr. Arbery is still dead, so there can…

World passes 300 million COVID cases as omicron breaks records | The Japan Times

In the past seven days, 34 countries have recorded their highest number of weekly cases since the start of the pandemic, including 18 nations in Europe and seven in Africa, according to an AFP count based on official figures.

While far more contagious than previous coronavirus variants, omicron appears to cause less severe illness than its predecessors.

Even as it spurred the world to record 13.5 million cases in the last week alone — 64% higher than the previous seven days — the global average of deaths dropped 3%.

France’s public health authority said Friday that the risk of hospitalization was about 70% lower for omicron, citing data from the U.S., the U.K., Canada and Israel.

However with a global average of 2 million new cases being detected daily, experts warn the sheer numbers threaten to overwhelm health systems.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that omicron should not be categorized as mild, as it “is hospitalizing people and it is killing people.”

Officers Ran Off After Firing Stun Gun That Set Man Ablaze, Video Shows – The New York Times (Me: He died from effects of being set on fire)

He said that if officers are properly trained, they should try to confirm if any liquids nearby are alcohol-based.

“Most people, not everybody, knows that hand sanitizers are alcohol-based,” he said, adding: “Based upon that, they should not deployed their Tasers.”

“He was an unarmed individual in a closed room with three officers,” Mr. Higgins continued. “They had several options at their disposal.”

Madeira: Spaziergang zu den Balkons von Ribeiro Frio … Madeira: Walk to the balconies of Ribeiro Frio

Stella, oh, Stella

… We went from Pahlheiro Village in as straight a line northward as possible.

… Therefore, one has a great…
