Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Good People Doing Good Things — Stuck In The Snow!

Filosofa's Word

When a sudden snowstorm hit Virginia, Washington D.C., and other surrounding areas on January 4th, the roads and interstate highways quickly became a mess, stranding some drivers for as long as 24 hours in their cars on icy, snow-covered roadways. Today’s good people emerged from that situation.

Life-saving bread

Casey Holihan Noe and her husband John, along with many other motorists, had been stranded on I-95 for over 20 hours and noticed that a Schmidt Baking truck was also stuck out on the road with them.  Said Casey …

“After almost 21 hours of being stuck on 95 South, sleeping here over night, not having access to food or water, and all of the nearest towns being out of power we were tired, frustrated, and hungry. Many of the people stuck out here had small children, were elderly, had pets in the car, and hadn’t eaten in almost…

Introduction to Mutual Aid and hierarchies

LANDBACK Friends

As I’ve been talking and writing about Mutual Aid, I’m not surprised that most of the questions relate to hierarchies. Mutual Aid is founded on a flat or horizontal hierarchy, where everyone has a voice in decisions.

I would highly recommend Dean Spade’s book , “Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next)”. Two of the videos he has produced are very helpful. [See below]

My practical experience related to hierarchies comes from the past two years with Des Moines Mutual Aid. My friend Ronnie James is an Indigenous organizer with twenty years of experience and has been my Mutual Aid mentor.

It is widely acknowledged that it takes time to learn how to be in a mutual aid community. We are so entrenched in vertical hierarchies in our society.

By participating in groups in new ways and practicing new ways of being together, we are both building…

Rest-Descanso

Deserved rest

REST

Sometimes the body just wants a break. A place to stop, silence, have rest in the heart’s home, exhausted from the routines, the unspoken words, the frightening silences, the crying nights. A rest, an open place, with wind, with water, with trees and new people. With an atmosphere of fraternity and a lot of friendship. Find people, nature, colors and shapes. A rest is to have a place to…
